C5 Gearstick

Post by Rodders100 »

Hi, I own a C5 2.2HDI manual estate. Sometimes the reverse actuator on the gearstck has stuck in the up position. I would like to take the top of the gearstick off so i can get some thin lube od furniture palish down the stcik or actautor. Does any one know how to take the stck head off please. I dont want to force anything.

Thanks

I'm pretty sure that it just comes off with a sharp upward pull, but no doubt others will be able to confirm.

I think it might depend on which gearbox you have. If reverse is opposite 5th gear it'll pull off; if it's further over than 1st gear I'm not sure.
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

Our C5 SX has that problem, its not an issue unless you pull the neck of the gearlever up hard, then it gets stuck, if you dont realise you end up getting reverse instead of first. Though thankfully it has a beep to say its in reverse.

Ive tried squirting WD40 up the neck but it didnt get any better. Im just leaving it for now as it only happens occasionally when its pulled up hard.

Im not sure if the knob does come off, as i think its part of the lifting neck assembly.

gearknob

Post by timborob »

My gearstick has an aftermarket one and mine too gets stuck occasionally and I have to manually push the sleeve down and have ended up reversing back further than I wanted to!

I have already enquired at a Citroen dealer for a proper Gearknob and was told its around £35 which I thought was very reasonable.

I was going to get one but then read in another forum post that the original gearknob is sharp in places, has anyone else found this?

maybe that's why the last owner changed it
Regards
Tim

The aluminium trim on top, which shows the gear positions, has a tendency to bubble up and fracture, leaving sharp edges.
As far as I've noticed, there are no sharp edges on a knob in good condition.

Mine is badly worn with bits of the aluminium part missing but hasn't any sharp edges - they have probably worn smooth.

OUr old C5 estate had the same style gearknob, the finish was coming away and it was quite sharpe to use. The SX with similar mileage is still perfect, no marks on the chrome finish at all. I was thinknig it possibly depends if the owner has had a ring on and marked the chrome.

I did price one at the dealers for the old estate, im sure it was much more than £35.

No, there are no sharp edges on a good gearknob, they are very smooth and nice to use.

All 3 of our C5s have unmarked gearknobs, even the SX with 123K.

Post by Rodders100 »

Thanks for your thoughts guys. The stick is still sticking! Will have a look for worn edges. Its just an annoyance more than anything
