C3 1.4 hdi poor fuel consumption

Post by maz666 »

Hi,just wondering if any one can help me?
Have a c3 1.4 hdi,had it for about 5 months now,is a 03 plate.
Was doing approx 50 mpg when we 1st bought it,has now gone down to approx 38-40mpg,this seems to have happened since it has been serviced,i'm really dissapointed with this as i expected a bit more.
Been doing roughly the same driving work and back, maybe the odd drive of 40 mile journeys once a week.
Any help or suggestions all greatly appreciated!! :D

Is your C5 HDi the 1.4HDI 70bhp 8v or the 1.4HDi 90bhp 16v?

Your economy does seem a little low and the fact its dropped from what you were getting by quite a lot might mean there is a problem somewhere.

There might well be a faulty sensor or something. You could try getting it to a garage with Lexia software and seeing if any fault codes have been stored.

Does it seem to be running ok other than the MPG?

What was done at the service?

Was it just oil, oil filter and air filter or did they change the fuel filter too?

Have you had a look under the bonnet to see if anything has been left off. I've had many items left unplugged or unclipped after a garage service and that's why I do it all myself now.

If they did the air filter they may have disturbed the connector to the air flow meter. Just unplug it and plug it back in a couple of times to see if this makes a difference.

I once unplugged all available connectors on my C5 including pulling fuses out and back in. Just refreshing the electrical contacts this way made my C5 run better.
Cheers, Kev

Hi thanks for the replies,citroenmad its a c3 and its the 1.4hdi 19bhp 16v.
Yeah its all running fine apart from this,i intially bought the car because of the fuel economy,so as you can guess im a little dissapointed.
And i love the car its very comfy,so is a real shame! :(

Kev,the service was done by my hubby, and yes was fuel filter as well, have checked all conectors seem fine,so not sure what else it could be!!

Will have to get it checked citroenmad,to see if it is a sensor.
Many thanks to you both for taking time to reply,Maz. :D

I of course ment C3, got C5s on the brain!

It could be a seonsor, a diagnostic check isnt expensive and would be my first route of problem finding - as you have obviously checked the usual things - leaks etc.

Let us know what your finding are :)

I have a C3 1.4 auto in Australia andI think the fuel consumption is really pathetic basically. I dont understand why its so bad and my car is serviced regularly.

Do you give them regular italian tune ups at all to help blow the cobwebs out as driving carefully all the time can lead to soot build up which won't help performance/economy?
