What on earth is this...

It's got me stumped! It lives behind the driver's side wing on a
1998 2.0i 16v Estate with auto adaptive I'm currently breaking.

There's just electrical feeds - no pipes, seems reasonably heavy
and has a series of small torx holding the two halves together.
I can't disconnect it so will likely leave it on the shell or open it
up/cut the wiring feed. Not decided!

It's criminal breaking this car - the bodyshell is perfect and
rust/damage free but the PO ran the engine dry of oil and I now
need to ruthlessly prune numbers. Doesn't seem right breaking
it - even the top driver's door hinge is perfect!

Any clues or suggestionson this piece? I thought initially it must be
cruise control being an auto car but there's no dash switch. No traffic
master either!

Now, seriously, let me know of any wire numbers on the loom going to it and I should be able to work out what it is...

In there you'll find relay's, in a S1 it houses the headlamp wash relay and a couple of other's. I spent quite a lot of time searching for the headlamp wash relay on what is now Jim's Activa, I can't believe I didn't look there first

Just undo the Torx screws and all will be revealed, it won't go bang!

how fare have you stiped this car, cant you just drop a 1.9 TD engine and manual box into it, then you could donate to auto adaptive box to Sir Jim to tinker with,

It's a fair packet of work to convert an auto to a manual Malcolm. Better off finding a good engine and retaining all the auto bits...

Anyways, I don't do AL4s. I only do 4HP20s

There's no room in my brain for another autobox

i converted a BX AUTO to manual years ago and it was very easy, swapped the flywheel and pedel box and not much more,

and a cabin temp sensor.
If they will fit an S1 that is.

The car is virtually just a rolling shell now though I'll need to get the engine
out complete to save the head (desperately needed for another Exclusive 16v)
and the gearbox is a 100% fine and IIRC quite a low miler to valuable too...

What's the deal with removal of the AL4 box as I've not removed one yet and don't fancy wrecking something on the linkages/electrics...?

The paint code IS different on the series 2 though that door is already
earmarked for another car anyhow sorry.

Do you think that the cam bearings will be in good shape after being run without enough oil in it? I suppose you're going to find out for us.

Do the camshaft caps snap like 2.1 and 19 TD's!? To date I've only driven
these engines not rebuilt their innards.

Yes, the cams could be dogfood but the recipient car has a snapped
cambelt so I'm hoping there'll be a balance of decent valves and cams
to make something work out...

the engine that lost it's bottom end bearings suffered a cracked sump
when it got welted by a traffic bollard in the dark whilst at speed. The
driver had only recently had hydraulics work done and been told by his
garage if a red warning light on the dash lit saying stop it would be his
LHM level and it'd be safe to get home the 3 miles...

it follows that if the bottom end went doo lally the top won't be far behind.
So, an interesting project though the recipient car would be worth sourcing
decent parts for if this breaker engine can't deliver.

Is that an 1800 or 2000 16v?? Are the heads the same?

Ive been offered a RED 1997 R reg 1800 16v to save, for 150 quids. Ive no real interest in the car really.. just the air con stuff..

Theres not much wrong - apart from being sat for about 5 years.. Altinator problems apparently, but she still runs.. or something with the front brakes..

I think its a Marooney red rather then Orange red that fades..

No idea about the heads Paul but this is a rarer 2.0 16v.

What AC bits are you after as I've just removed some off
this s2 estate I'm breaking primarily to get them out of
my way, not because I like AC!!
