Engine cutting out.

Post by Alec B »

Hi to all, I've just been rescued by the RAC due to the engine cutting out. This is the third time it's happened since friday. On Friday it cut out at about 60mph but came to life within 2 seconds, on Sunday the car was ticking over on the drive as I nipped indoors to pick up my mobile when it stalled but it started instantly when I got back in then yesterday it died totally at about 30mph and refused to start at all hence the RAC callout. Whilst talking to the RAC mechanic i mentioned that the lift pump in the tank was replaced about 3 yrs ago (by myself pump from GSF) so we had a look at it quickly but just before I turned the engine over he thunped the pump and the car started the first time I tried it (could this be coincidence). I have just had a call from the garage I took it to to say that the botton pulley was duff so they are replacing it (could this be linked to the fault). Would just like the car back and the garage are is not having any luck as the fault won't come back.

Whatever about the pulley being duff. It seems to me that your In-Tank Pump is finished. Hitting a thump on the bottom of the tank is sometimes a typical short term solution to this problem, but a remedy that works only once (if you are lucky) if the pump is O.K you should hear some action from the direction of the tank - check that.

If there is a problem with the lift pump then the ECU will have detected low pressure and locked it into the error matrix. An examination with a Lexia will confirm this. If that is the case coupled with evidence that thumping the tank cures the problem I would regard as pretty conclusive, mind I would expect a lift pump to last more than three years.

The pump on my Xantia 110BHP died, without any error light showing on the dashboard. Try the old fashioned way- open the filter housing and you wil see if any fuel is entering. If no fuel is entering your pump is finished. I am told by a mechanic friend that those pumps have an uncertain life-span. My last pump lasted 10 years & 130,000 miles. My son's C5 is 9 years old with 150,000 Miles ,and still going, keeping my fingers crossed.
