banging noise

Post by sijrayner »

will check tonight but does anyone know what a loud metallic clang might be when i pull away. i assume it is something to do with suspension. maybe a strut bush gone south or similar. noise comes from the rear, it occurs as i move off, then nothing, although i think i may have heard it again when i went round a roundabout.
any thoughts ??????
why oh why did i buy a C5.

How many miles has your C5 done?

Could possibly be a rear radious arm bearings, thats possibly the worst case. Usually casues a cracking noise, though usually over bumps.

Evidence both in this forum and others would indicate that this is quite a common failure after about 70K, in my case 95K.

There have been several threads in this forum discussing the repair of the bearings and the "gotchers" well worth reading if contemplating DIY.

I'd check it's not something simple like exhaust hitting the body. Fingers crossed :)

Yes, check obvious things first.

I wouldnt have thought you would get a radious arm bearing to make a noise when pulling away, unless your being agressive with it and the car is really dipping.

OUr previous C5 estate had a bearing go, it caused very loud cracking noises when running over bumps. The sound was very bad and it spread through the car, i thought it was the front at first as the cracking could be felt through the floor. It started suddenly.

Its not a major job though.

had a thought, has anyone heard of anything like this being caused by a brake related problem, it's a bit of a tinny noise really and seems to occur when the rear brakes are releasing, i know i need to get the car up and check.

Bit tinny was like mine. It started off small and the grew into a major clatter over three years.

Best to get the radious arm bearing checks ASAP as play can wear the inside of the bearing housing and cause real damage.

I was advised by a number of garages when they eventually found out what it was that I may as well buy a new car!

Up to that point dealers and specialist were unable to find the noise, so if you take it to garage mention radious arm bearing.

It cost me £275 to have them replaced which was less than a new car. But get it checked soon.
C'est pas possible!

Some years ago when I had my Xantia I had a bang - maybe more of a loud click when driving off. I discovered it was caused by a loose brake pad hitting the far end of the slot.

obviously hopeful, but this sounds like something i will check before ripping into bearings, brakes have always been really squealing so hoping dodgy pad alignment
