Berlingo aircon failure

Hi there,
Air con on my 2004 1.6 petrol Berlingo has failed, working perfectly one day nothing the next, contol switch illuminates but pump clutch does not energise, no volts show on multimeter at connector on pump body, pump is free to turn. seems to be a fair gas pressure if the top up valve is "blipped" Are there any other checks I can do before reaching for the wallet. I am in Menorca so no Halfords or Kwik fit.

Could just be that it's low on gas? (but not empty)

The original fault still exists but now the heater fan will only run in high speed and only with the engine running, getting a terrible pain in the wallet coming on.
