C5 worth looking at ?

Post by mark21td »

I have been ofered a 52 plate C5 HDI 90 estate, I think it's an LX, with 220k mostly motorway miles, it's been surviced by the owner and had the head gasket done at xmas by a garage.
I've known the guy for about a year and seams a genuin fella.
He said he's no problems with it apart from the head gasket and has been a good car.
I think the price will be in the regen of £500.
What do you guy's think ?

If its £500 then i would take a chance on it. Drive it first though as the 90's are very very slow...

I had one in a Xantia estate and it was driven so slowly by its previous owner that on its first run back to our house it smoked for the first 10 miles as i pushed it hard to clean it out :) was much better after that on biodiesel :)

My dad has a C5 one like the one you mention with 60k on the clock and its just as slow as my old estate was and stalls easily for a diesel...

Take it for a blast and see if it smokes. if it does then you know its been driven very gently. if it doesn't then its been worked hard often...

I know it's driven at a steady pace on the motorway (70ish) so smoke shoudn't be an isue.
It will be run on my biodiesel and should be a good test as to the quolaty of my fuel.
I'm still working on the wife as she hates my Xantia but loves her 406, so I'm hopeing the C5 is a good mix of the two.

For £500 its probably worth taking a risk on, if you know the guy and car then at least you know it might be a good car.

Have you checked when the clutch was changed and the cambelt last done?

Yes 90s are slow, so try it first, if you drive fast or do a lot of towing or carrying heavy items then it might be worth going for a 110, but at that price i dont think there is room to complain. If nothing else it will give you a taste of what C5s are like.

Again, check the electrics well, make sure all the indicator/wiper stalks are doing their job.

Well your Xantia is around 90BHP? The C5 is quite a bit heavier so will be a bit slower.

Depends how fast you like to drive and what you use your car for i guess.

Performance should be the last thing, a C5 estate for £500, there must be a bigger catch than the mileage!

Can always get a remap for £200 and incrase bhp to around 120!

twice as old as me

The c5 was slow to accelerate, you could get out and run faster  other than the electrical faults and other minor niggles it is lovely to drive..just dont expect to be doing much overtaking  Nice car but shes no Xantia \:D/

Well I was chating to him and asking what the C5's are like,
in the conversation he said he will be replaceing it soon and we discused it's value,
I said with that sort of mileage he would be lucky to get £600 to £700 for it on a traid in (which is way he would do it),
he reconed he would have to buy some thing very expecive to get that much,
so at this point I asked if I could have the first refusal when he sells it.
So I recon I can get it for around £500.

It has got the usaul carpark dings and scratches and one of the plastic moldings below the rear door is missing, but otherwise is in reasonable condition.

Do you think £500 is ripping him off or just a fair price ?

As far as the power do those little boxes you can get on ebay work ok ?

Your not ripping him off anyway thats for sure and for the cost of getting it re-mapped or buying that box id rather have a low mileage well looked after c5 for an extra £200

I see your point, but I'm pushing it with the wife to spend £500 on a car that she thinks I don't need as I've not had my Xantia long.

I cant imagine your going to get an excellent C5 for £900 to be honest, that ebay one has sold for almost £1500, £1000 more than mark21td has been offered one for.

Plus thats a 2.2 and if your after cheap running id avoid those, go for the 2.0, more economical and no FAP, which you will probably need to do something with at some point.

Its its not undity (the missing plastic trim is easy to come by and fit), then id suggest you buy it and see what you think. If you dont like it i bet you could even make money on selling that. Stick it on autotrader and you will get a decent price, might even double your money.

Just because it has 220K doesnt make it a bad C5, it might be a far better car than a low mileage example.
Its also a 52plate which is better than the 51reg on ebay, i dont like early models due to they are usually the cars with the more problems before they get sorted out. 52reg cars are very slightly different in some ways, 110s have a different gearbox from around then and all have an economy button on the climate and not an ac button. Small things but it might save you some electrical glitches.

In my opinion, if your thinking about a C5, i cant see how you can go wrong with a £500 one, unless its really a poor car. If it breaks, you could always sell it for bits!

I know someone with a 90bhp C5 hatch, they think its ok and usually drive like an idiot, though probably best he doesnt have anything faster!

There are a load of 90bhp 406 estates, infact i would say possibly the majority are and people seem to love those.

Unless you go everywhere trying to be infront of the car infront, tow or haul heavy things then i wouldnt worry much about the performance., Give it a try, if its a decent car buy it and go from there, you can always sell it.
