Xantia coming apart at the seams...

Post by KP »

Ok, I may have an Activa but this is the first time i have noticed a xantia that seems to be 'splitting' apart.

At the top of the C pillars where the guttering is along the length of the gutter there are visible cracks which look quite deep. This is not just on one side but is on both...

Is it the paint cracking and going all the way down to the metal or is it possible that its the welds that are cracking as i am sure this must be a part of the body that is welded?

Is it maybe caused by hard cornering as i give my activa a good workout everyday and still manage to get about 28+mpg out of my last few tanks as i keep a lot of speed into corners :)

It's body flex cracking the seam sealer - my wagon has it, too. I'd suggest you warm the area gently with a hair dryer on a nice summers' day, and work some fish oil (of the anti-rust variety) into the cracks.

Fish oil's very thin; more so when the air and surface are warm. It creeps into the cracks, then air-dries somewhat flexible to fill them. You clean the surface residue off with mineral turpentine.

Net result is your external look remains unchanged, but water can't get into the cracks and linger (especially perilous when it freezes in cracks).

I've noticed these cracks in the past Will. Nothing to worry about at all...

Not like my old 205GTi. I lifted the carpets on it one day and found real, genuine stress cracks in the chassis rails :P

Cheers Jim :)

Addo, This Fish Oil, is it quite literally just that as over here on the summer days we have it does get very hot on the outside skin of the car, maybe 30+ so im not sure an oil would stay in that crack on those days, especially driven at 70ish ;) on the journey home...

I use it here (where it does get slightly warm at times  ). Gets in far deeper than things like WaxOyl.
