Where is the fuel filter on Xantia 1.9 TD?
I thought I'd read that it was under the rear seat behind the driver... now I'm thinking it's under the bonnet.
What have I missed?
What have I missed?

Hi Tim
The fuel filter is under the bonnet .It located in the fuel filter housing sat on top of the thermostat.Just undo the 4 bolts and lift the lid off.The picture is off a 2.1td but its the same housing

Under the rear o/s passenger seat is the access to the fuel tank which has the pick up/return feeds and the fuel gauge sender unit.On the bottom of the sender unit is a filter/gauze to stop most of the muck getting into the fuel lines to start with

Ah, ok, Colin, thanks. So that gauze filter under the seat is to be washed out rather than replaced, I take it?
What has always freaked me out about diesels is that I have worried about air getting into the lines. Is this really a possibility by removing covers in this way to either check/clean or replace filters?
I know, (or at least I think I know) that it's bad news to allow a system to be deprived of derv as this leads to air int he lines, but what about the pipes or filter housings?
Many thanks.

hi Tim

this is after many years, and some of those on SVO and WVO..
worth a look at yours, it comes apart, wash it all.. airline could be handy but not essential.. allow an hour to do the job.. and watch you dont cut your hands on the floor of the car.. there are two pipes and a loom connector there, and a large plastic threaded collar to undo.. (I tapped mine with a blunt flathead and a mallet) until it was moving..

ps can someone tell me why that img doesn't seem to work

Hi Tim
I wouldnt worry too much about letting air into the lines whilst you are working on the system as this is unavoidable
.When you have put everything back together just squeeze the priming bulb (up by the drivers side sphere) until it gets very hard to compress. This will prime the system with fuel and once started the system should then self bleed any air out.
The real problem with air in the fuel lines is when you havent opened it up and it will cause problems in starting and rough running.
Well thats my understanding anyhow

Being a 1991 H, she has the older setup with external fuel filter bolted to the battery box..
This "Xantia 1.9 TD" style fuel filter is sooooooooo much simpler to replace! And is much neater...
Shall look into putting one on, pleanty in the shed!

Tim, your '95 being a MK1 will be slightly different inside, just a straight funnel down with the mesh in the bottom, rather than the flexible pipe bit in John's pic.

Finally got around to looking under the rear seat for the gauze filter...
Um, I couldn't quite get to it.
There's a plastic trim up near the hinge of the rear seat, and it's sort stuck at one side - where there a few wires going to a small, black, almost rectangular grommet sort of thing. Is it this that I need to be getting access to?
I appreciate the filter is under the bonnet; it's this sender unit I'm interested in right now..

nearly Tim. You should see a big round black plastic bung, like an enormous blind grommet. Prise that out and all will be revealed. The sender/pipe/filter assembly is secured into the top of the tank with a larhe threaded ring. That can be a bit of an article to remove. Attack it (gently) with a soft drift and large hammer against one of the ribs and deliver some careful blows; it'll unscrew and the whole shebang will then lift out.Napoleon wrote: There's a plastic trim up near the hinge of the rear seat, and it's sort stuck at one side - where there a few wires going to a small, black, almost rectangular grommet sort of thing.
