shocking stuff

Post by sijrayner »

any ideas ? everytime i get out of my C5 Hdi i get a huge shock when closing the door, any passengers also get a big jolt as well. now i am getting used to it but wife and 3 and 6 year old kids are getting the grumps. these are not little tiny shocks either they actually hurt, is this a standard C5 extra or is mine just a little mental, it seems to be getting worse.
why oh why did i buy a C5.

My 205 does that but only in the summer, I figured it was static build up due to my clothing or something like that.

I don't know if those strange straps you can get that contact the ground (bit like a braided earth strap, but you fit it to around your rear bumper area or somewhere else metal, and it contacts the ground) would help discharge static electricity :?:

It will be static, i get it sometimes on some vehicles, i think it depends on the seat material and what your clothes are made of.
Im sure the static charge is stored on you, and it jumps to earth through the cars metal structure giving a shock as it does, try not to touch the car when getting out and touch the closest persons ear instead...............ok it will still shock you too but it will shock them more and is very funny  ....sorry

As said, a combination of seats and clothing. I used to get it on some of my cars.

When getting out the car, open the door and before starting to get out the seat, hold a metal part of the door or body as you get out, earthing yourself as you exit. You should find you won't get anymore shocks.

Alternatively, fit leather seats

what you need is leather seats, never happens with them.

I get this problem too, but mine is caused by what shoes i'm wearing. A pair of trainers and another pair of rubbery soled shoes always guarantee a shock when getting out of the car. I put it down to rubbing them on the nylon car mats that i've got.
To stop getting shocked, I always reach down and touch the ground when I get out of the car. Seems to work for me, presumably by discharging the static build-up.

answers make sense, never had it in my mondeo but that had leather seats. will try to get one of those straps and fix it to tow bar as bumpers are plastic i think.

In very dry conditions almost any combination of materials will gererate static, I had a Vauxhall Velox with vinyl bench seats, when you slid out of that a visible spark would jump from your hand to the door handle - or the other way round.

Hi, bending down to touch the ground is not too much of a problem but at my age getting back up again is the problem.
