Xantia gear linkage

Post by dieseldoggy »

Hi all just driving along thought i'd missed a gear when linkage went wonky? anyway found when looked under bonnet that the rod N'o4 in bol manual/gear shift rod has come adrift.i still have something on top of ball joint.wondering if liners come out of bit on end of rod or do they snap off? could n't find rod when poking arm down as was abit too hot to get arm any further than ball.

Yes, the liners can come away from the rods and remain on the ball.
Had this happen to Cassy years ago when her speedo snapped and I had to tie it back together to get home causing gear changes to be "interesting"

Jim and I tried gluing the liner back into the rod's cap, but it didn't last long.
Headed to the local scrappy and gently prised one off, making sure I applied pressure to the liner rathe than the rod cap so it all came off in one piece.

the issue I had with gluing was pushing the liner back inside caused an air pocket which prevented a good seal.

Got it back together and working ok?.well tried cleaning up with a drop of petrol then drop of glue once straight but needed to leave longer to set as popped of again.
So in the end we did it with a massive paper clip!wrapped some round shaft then looped it over rod round that a few times then back round shaft then sort of crimped it tight round it with a pair of double jointed long handled pliers.(Halfrauds do them £30ish but brill for doing glowplugs etc)
So now it changes gear better than before now?
But going to try to get a rod from??? what sort of price would you say they are?

I wouldn't pay much.

A new one is <£20 from the dealer (or used to be  ) - hardly worth the effort of trying to fit a 2nd hand one, that is probably little better than the one you've got.
