Xantia - Automatic Transmission Fluid

Post by brmartyn »

I'm in need of some new autobox fluid and I'm after some advice. I've seen the following on Ebay -

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ATF-DIII-DEXRON-3 ... 3a54458225

I would like to know if this is suitable. From speaking to Jim a couple of months back I know he recommends the fluid you get directly from Citroen (part number 9736.22). Just thought I'd ask before heading to the dealer. Thanks everyone.

The Dexron will kill your box stone dead very quickly. Only use the Citroen 9736.22/ Esso LT71141. It's liquid gold but the only suitable fluid.

Would this one be suitable then?

It might be but as it is not genuine Esso stuff, I'd steer clear of it.

I believe Esso are the only mob allowed to make the pukka stuff.

The Smith and Allan website does not seem to list a LT71141 compatible product, so I think it is just an unscrupulous ebay trader.

The suitable uses it lists below appear too comprehensive (includes Dexron II and III) for this to be correct. I notice they also list what looks like a genuine 20L Esso LT71141 @ £138, but I would be very wary in view of their claims for the 5L. A recon or overhaul of your box is too much to risk to save a few pounds.

Well yes Mike, dodgy geezer or not, the stuff he's flogging is DEX III (or maybe even DEX II) in disguise.

It's NOT a substitute for Esso LT. He gives himself away when he asys it can be used wherever DEX III is specified.

Also, the ZF TE-ML 03D/04D/14A spec, is for DEX II by the (quick) looks of it.

Basically, if it's not made by Esso it isn't LT71141 and is not suitable for the AL4/4HP20.

There is no similarity between it and DEX. DEX is a lot thinner for a start.

But (in the case of a 4HP20 only) it might make me some pocket money

I don't, and have no intention of doing AL4s anytime soon...

I'm led to believe the 4HP20 is a pussycat in comparison so whatever you do, don't go putting anything dodgy in your AL4 please

I changed my AL4's oil yesterday after 153k miles. It was very black and extremely thin. The new oil has made changes much smoother. I would recommend putting a peg on your nose, cos the smell of cat wee is rather pungent!!

PS. 4litres cost £45 from the local stealers, but the result is soothing my wallet somewhat.

Excellent Keith :D Pleased it made a palpable difference!

You ideally now need the car to see a Lexia to have the oil wear counter reset.

That's reassuringly expensive... Mobil should be OK although I'd like to see the label before buying...

Maybe it's gone up through the roof recently but I think I paid somewhat less for 20L of Esso from Automatic Choice back in November.

Now that we may have someone (best wishes Toby) working at a rather large refinery run by Esso/Mobil what chances of bulk buying along with staff discount :)

Hi Jim, yes very pleased with the results. Will anyone at Wetherby have a Lexia to reset my oil counter in exchange for beer tokens?
Oil Store list genuine Esso 71141 @ £122 per 20L. If anyone buys 20L, I would be happy to take 4L at the going rate as I will need to do another partial change in a few weeks.
