Xantia V6 sloppy brake pedal

At a recent MOT on my Mk 2 v6 the tester commented that there seemed to be excessive side-to-side play in the brake pedal, and that this should be rectified at before next year's test.

To my recollection the pedal has been that way since I bought the car eight years ago, but I attempted to inspect the mounting yesterday, and discovered that this is so far up behind the dash that it can not be seen by peering up from the footwell.

Two questions:

Is this play typical of automatic Xantias?

If I were to take off the lower dash panels and steering wheel shroud would this give me access to the pedal pivot bolt to enable a shim to be inserted? I don't want to do the dismantling to find that I am no better off.

I've just checked my V6 and there is about 1/4" of sideways movement, how much does your move by?

Perhaps the tester was not used to this marque and simply decided to advise you it was excessive ?

I note they did not fail it, just advise it from what you are saying, so they may have been 50/50 on it being OK or not.

Few are....

V6 Xantias are not exactly commonplace......

It would be interesting to know how many are still on the road in the UK. It think it was less than 500 to start with and the rate of attrition with their gearbox woes will have been high.

I'd love to know how many of the survivors are MK1s. Double figures I'd expect, if not single figures. If the latter is the case, we know where virtually all of them are....

i think all XANT's have quite a bit of side to side movement at the brake pedel, if you dont already i would sudgest take it to a citroen specialist next year for the MOT,

the brake pedel opperates diferently on all hydraulic citroens to other types of system

Thanks for the advice, guys. I measured the overall movement as around 7mm, so that seems to be nothing to out of the ordinary.

I will print out this thread and show it to the tester next year. He is not a Citroen specialist (my nearest is inconveniently far away) but he is a helpful and friendly bloke, who always makes admiring comments about the car.
