807 Auto gearbox fault

Post by stonie »

I've a Peugeot 807 auto that shows "gearbox faulty" on the dashboard screen while driving, the gear will drop to 3rd with a lump and will stay like this until I switch off the engine to reset it.
I have taken it to a Peugeot garage who changed the gearbox oil and a "pressure switch" and reset the computer. £500 later and it's still the same. Its a 54 plate with 50k on the clock.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome stonie :D

First job is to get a proper diagnostics session on the 'box to see why it is feeling the need to drop into 3rd Emergency (i.e. Limp Home) Mode. There are a plethora of reasons.

I could guess as to why but I'd be just as well off trying to predict 6 lottery numbers...

What your dealer did was the standard desperation first-fix for any automatic gearbox problem. Change the oil and then change what I presume is the multi-function switch that ells the ECU the selector position. And he charged you £500? Outrageous!

Generally, dealers don't understand autoboxes and are often shy of them, believing them to be magical and properly belonging in the realm of Harry Potter. I'd be inclined to take the car to a good autobox specialist and have them run a dianostic session using the proper Pug tool and then seeing what comes up. Armed with that, come back here and one of us will give a prognosis...

What gearbox is it? The AL4 or 4HP20? The latter is easier to repair than the former...
