Post by harryjoe »

Evening all..

Just need to pick your knowledgable brains on an early XM.

Is there anything in particular that the earlyer one's suffered with ? as i believe 1992 was the 1 st year of production ! ( i could be wrong )

Iv'e been offered what looks to be a nice one, and very low mileage, but just wondered if they had many teething problems that i need to be aware of.

It's a 2ltr petrol, with aa good service history.

Any thoughts

Hi

This age will be what is known in XM circles as a MK1.5 n/a petrols got a full injection and ignition computer rather than having a dizzy and so gained a bit of power, there were earthing mods and a rather bland two spoke wheel.
things to watch for are damaged and rusty sills, especialy at the back, make sure the hydractive works and you can feel it switch from sports to normal mode with the switch by the gear lever, if its auto you should be seeing good clean red transmission fluid in the dipstick and preferably some service history to prove regular maintenance of the box, you should also see clean bright green LHM in the hydraulic resovoir. Apart from that its just the usual stuff to check for.
First year of manufacture was 1989 by the way with the facelift MK2 coming into production at around M reg, 92 to 94 were MK1.5 and are regardeed as the best age by some, keeping the original wierdness with increased reliability although by this age its almost irrelivant as any problems will have been delt with.

Thanks D, for the advice :D

Yes iv'e just done i bit more digging , and 1989 was the 1st year   ,
as for the sport mode on the suspension, when switched to that mode, can you feel any differance while just at idle, or only when moving ?
sorry to sound a bit thick about this, but not had an Xm before so they for me are new territory.

I will check all oil's when i see it , but it is supposed to have a full history,
it's only covered 80000 miles !

Thanks once agian

Well if its a true S1.5 it will have hydractive 2, which will only cut in when it needs to. However early S1 cars have hydractive1, which is in when selected is in sports mode all of the time.

To test its working, open the cars door and there should be a buzzing noise, this is the ECU in soft mode, the car should feel soft to push up and down. Then shut the door, after a short time (i forget the exact figure, i need to remember it! a minute or so) the buzzing will stop and the car will be in sports mode, then it will feel harder to press up and down. This is without the engine running.

um MK1.5's had both hydractive 1 and 2 fitted they bridged the changeover period, but neither will enter sport at idle, whilst driving the difference should be very noticable if all is well with hydractive 1.
Prestige was basicaly base spec cars garnished with leather, A/C and digital climate plus a few other goodies like Ettoil alloys and abs.

mine has all the above including electric windows, electric sunroof, heated electric mirrors, unheated manual leather seats, IR remote central locking and alarm so not a bad spec really.

yes its down to model, the prestige does not have it but if you can find one it can be fitted, i got one for mine but you need the rear roof trim with the bulge's to cover the hinges too, not something that comes up that often but they are about.

They are a very nice car but its unlikely you will buy one that doesn't need some attention, I've been buying them for years and all mine have. Unless the suspension spheres have been replaced recently, a new set will do wonders for the ride, there are seven in all, including the accumulator sphere, you can buy the whole lot from GSF for about £160.00, but if you don't want to replace them all, the centre front and rear spheres will make the most difference to the ride.

The thing we both forgot to say is that there is loads of info on http://www.club-xm.co.uk/forum/index.php
if you do a search there is lots of info on trim and the car in general too for you to look over.
