Ok, here's another one......
My 1991 1.9d 405 seems to run cool. The temperature guage indicates a running temperature of about 70-80*c. Is this normal? I've found a switch that operates the fans so that they run permanently but set this to "off" today to see if it got any hotter but it didn't. There are some serious hills and twisty roads over here which means it hits 80*c on the way up but 70*c on the way down. What should it run at? Could the thermostat have been removed? Having said that it does get up to temp reasonably quickly.
what temperature should my 405 run at?

Typically these (and 306's too) run at about 80. The fans (if working on the switches as original) cut in at 90 and out at 80.
80 seems pretty normal
70 is a little low, however perhaps the gauge or sender has lost a little accuracy, although having said that they are generally reliable and long lasting. I'd assume you have a lazy thermostat (as in slightly open)
I do not think there's much to worry about if its OK tbh, although will wait to see what others have to say.
