Not having much luck with my xantia of late
110hdi
a squeeling sound (sounds a bit like a belt slipping)(not engine speed related) has started intermittently from the o/s/f wheel above 50mph.
jacked the car up and there is no play with my hands at 12-6 but there is some at 3-9.
i'm thinking wheel bearing but the sound is too high pitched for that as its usually a grinding sound isnt it?
still got my vibration as well, (although that appears to be from the n/s) could the two be related?
thanks guys

Hi Chris,
I'd be inclined to think this is a tensioner, either on the Aux.belt or the cambelt. May even be an alternator bearing failing.
Check the condition of the crank pulley and the aircon pump pulley.
Slip off the aux. belt and start up. If the noise has now gone, you know it's something the aux.belt drives.
If the noise stays, check the cambelt tensioners and jockeys.

I second the opinion about a small stone trapped in the pads. Is it more prominent if turning slightly? - right or left - I've got this at the moment. When the wheels are off for the tyre change later in the week I will have a look. My squeak comes and goes, more prominent at 30 - 40 mph in built-up area, where sounds are more easily noticed (bouncing off buildings, walls etc.). Sounds that is, not the car!
