Rasping sound.....deep bass resonation

Unread post by vince »

Ive just been reminded of this on mine whilst reading the Activa register thread.....

1995 TD Xantia.....

At 1500rpm when driving and the revs kept constant i get a continuous rasping sound as if an exhaust bracket is vibrating or something....also when idling the engine omits a very deep bass resonation which is worse when you open the sunroof or windows but strangely if you are stood outside the car you cant hear it at all...

Someone mentioned manifold? The bass thing definately started just after i had the headgasket done..

Thoughts people? Its one of the things i really want to nail as its annoying more than anything else...performance is otherwise the same.

Sure its not a split inlet pipe? The pipe from air filter box to turbo top pipe is a common failure, and could cause excess induction noise but no affect on performance, apart from drawing in dirty air... Its possible it was disturbed and now split.

if the aux belt auto tenssioner is over adjusted by to much tenssion it can cause a clattering noise against the cam belt cover, i think this is more at certain revs,

Thanks for the ideas guys but it is definately a metal droning noise...like as if you had a loose baffle in a silencer or something. The silencer is new ish though....Could still be my new rear brake backplates but the bass noise i think is definately located up front somewhere....

Hi Vince

Did you recently renew your handbrake cables :?: :?:

If so could the heat shield have become detatched and vibrating

Just a thought probably miles off target :)

Might be worth checking the undertray - if a fixing is missing or it is split/damaged you could get similar noise when moving.

I also wonder if you could get noise from the EGR valve if the moving internals are damaged in any way (as I gather it wouldn't be noticeable performace wise?). I would guess this should be repeatedable when stationery though.

Happy hunting
