1994 Diesel Espace Alternator

Hello.

The battery light on this Diesel Espace stays permanently on. I've looked at the wiring to the alternator - there are more wires than I expected. There is the normal thick red wire, a 2 way plug in connector with yellow and white wires plus single black and brown wires to the back of the alternator.

Does anybody have any idea what all these wires are for? I have a Haynes book but it has not wiring diagrams at all for the charging system.
