Xantia vibration when braking

Post by Chris570 »

got a 1999 xantia estate hdi100 so 283mm discs up front.

Symptoms are vibration when braking and vibration above 60mph to 80mph.

The wheels have been balanced as well

When i bought the car it had rusty discs so i swapped them over and the vibration went away for about 100 miles, then it came back again. So on the advice of previous owner i took the discs off and cleaned up the mating surface on the hub till it was like brand new and put some copper grease on both sides. I also changed the pads at this point as well (on one the friction material had broken away). Once again all was well for about 100 miles and then the vibration came back.

Any ideas as i'm now at a loss....

Try swapping the front and rear wheels over.

I've known fairly new discs to warp on a Xantia before now, giving the same symptoms. Happened to me with a set of Brembo discs. Lasted about 10,000 miles before they gave the wobbles.

I would have said pads near the end, but you've said you've changed them..

Bottom ball joints?? Track rod ends??

Jack the front of the car up, grasp the wheels top and bottom and rock, and also side to side, IE: Grasp at 6 O-clock and at quarter to 3, and rock to check for play in either ball joints..

Sounds like a lower ball joint possibillity..

Mine's still got it, and I've done the wishbone bushes; you can reasonably rule them out.

got a dti gauge on the disc and i saw a variation of 0.7mm, i would presume that's enough to cause the problems?

I've had these symptoms caused by failing flexible hoses. Also air in the system.. a good bleed maybe.

Chris - that's a whole lot of runout - even three thou (one-tenth of your figure) can be felt!

Make sure the rotor is tight on your hub before assuming the reading correct. A bit of spalling corrosion could be forcing that disparity.

It's tight on, i've had it all apart 3 times now and each time has been cleaned and checked.

i would assume i can get replacements under warrenty? (bought the discs 2 weeks ago)

anyone know what gsf's policy is on this?
