Help!!! Can anyone tell me how to replace the throttle spindle seals on a lucas injector pump. This is on a boxer 1.9 , it is using a lot of fuel when it is not running!!!

Hi Jimboy, welcome to the forum :D

This is a relatively easy job if the pump is not armoured and can be carried out in-situ, no need to remove the pump. If the pump is armoured, the pump must then be removed to firstly remove the armour. This is not a hugely difficult job.

You must be clinically clean though so give the exterior of the pump and surroundings a real good clean up.

Basically, remove the throttle and cold start levers, undo the four Torx screws holding the lid and carefully lift the lid whilst pressing the throttle spindle down. The lid will come off and leave the throttle spindle in place; the cold start mechanism will come off with the lid. Note the orientation of the cold start cam under the lid.

Obtain a seal kit from a specialist such as this one and replace the O rings on the spindle and the large seal under the lid. I find it best to cut the old O rings off the spindles and to lubricate the new ones with diesel for ease of fitting.

When you order a new seal set you must quote the full pump model number found on the blue plate underneath the pump.

Beware that some people are allergic to diesel and in such people, it can lead to contact dermatitis. If you don't know if you are or not, take care and wear nitrile gloves when doing the job. Take care also that when the lid of the pump is off, absolutely no dirt or foreign objects are allowed to enter.

Shout if you need any more help on this...

Hi Jim

Finally got round to doing the seals!!!
When I took it apart the centre seal was missing, but all went smoothly apart from when I lost one of the new seals, it took about an hour to find it.

Many thanks for your invaluable help. I don't think I would have attempted it without your advice.

Regards

Jim
