Still don't know what this noise is (Xantia 90Hdi)

Unread post by rmunns »

Doesn't seem to happen as much now, but still from time to time, when the engine is hot, there is a background drone on top of engine note.

Car is a 2000 90Hdi forte saloon.

Most noticeable when idling. The noise is just like a fan. Radiator fans are definitely not turning. The sound is constant, doesn't rise and fall with engine revs.

Noise stops instantly on turning ignition off.

Also, in cold weather, the first kick of the engine when it fires gives a very hefty jolt. This I did not notice until the cold weather came. Any ideas?

You wrote, that the noise stops, as soon as you turn the ignition off. Does it immediately start, when you afterwards crank up the engine again?

I am not that familiar with the 90 BHP version of that engine, but nevertheless, if there is the diesel lift pump in the tank, try to feel, if the return pipes from the engine to the tank (underneath the car) are vibrating, when the noise is there.

The noise only comes in when the engine is warmed up - you might notice it if you come to a halt after 20 miles, say.

Turn off and it stops at once. Start engine again straight away and it's not there.

It is coming from under bonnet.
