Locks

Unread post by Martin Beevers »

I'm almost there...

After sorting out the cause of my alarm problems (water letting by the scuttle) I now find another hurdle.

I can't turn on the alarm under the bonet. The key just twists in the barrel, it feels like it's not locating inside properly.

The same happened to both my door barrels too. I took them out and stripped them to find nothing amiss. The alarm key barrel is held in place differently to the door ones.
There apears to be an internal circlip holding the alarm barrel in place. How do I release it?

Hi Martin
not sure on the alarm barrel but the door locks will spin if the key is not firmly pushed right into the barrel.

Hi Martin

If the alarm switch has the same design as the XM one then there is no release for the barrel latch. I assume that is for security reasons. To release the XM one you need to know the latch position and drill a hole through the alloy case to suit.

It IS removable with out any drilling..

Theres a massive C type clip securing it to the scuttle on the underside, prise this away then turn the barrel so it matches the holes to drop it out....

The wireing is attached to the alarm unit, which is located behind the passenger wing either wing off or wheel arch liner out..

Later cars from around 1997 have it hidden inside the chassis member on the drivers side

Silent Sirens are a common thing!

John,

They are the same things as S2 XM's units

Hi Paul

I think we are talking about different things.
I agree that you can remove the keyswitch assembly and its wiring but getting the lock barrel out of the assembly for servicing is a whole different job. That is where I have found drilling needed.
Will bring a spare assembly with key next time I come to Anglesey then you can show me how to get the lock out using the key.

Correct John,

We are on different lines... I only meant the Whole unit.. Ive not had the need to remove a lock from the barrel on an alarm.. in honesty, alarms are only a PITA anyway!

I got another key from the main stealer, and it works.

My key was causing the problem all along.
