All Things V6...

Unread post by DHallworth »

Just thought I'd start a big of a blog thingie.

In 2007 we purchased this Xantia V6 with 27,000 miles on the clock from the daughter of an elderly gentleman who had died.

Since we've had it we've given it a full set of spheres, set of new Michelin tyres and plugs and leads as it started to miss quite badly.

There's a scuff on the front bumper that needs doing and it needs the silver strips on the doors replacing but other then that it's a mint condition V6 that only has 42k miles on it now.

I'll update more as we go along...

It is great to see a Mk1 V6 in such original condition. I think that makes 5 in the circle of this forum, reputedly about 2% of the total RHD production of the model.

Mine is now at 156,000 miles, but I need to get another 100,000 out of it to recoup the time and money spent rebuilding the transmission

Yes V6 .They got it all. Long legs on the Motorway. Very comfy on soft settings. Fantastic going through the bends for a 5 door. Good fuel consumption. I got over 30mpg yesterday on a trip up to Glencoe and back. It eats those kind of roads.

Mine has grown on me lots. I am a real fan now 8-)

Dad and I took it to Costco in Springburn and it was running perfectly.

When we came out of Costco we were heading to Edinburgh to see a Range Rover.

On the M8 around Harthill it started to misfire badly. We took it to the dealer in Edinburgh who couldn't find a fault.

When we got home we lifted the bonnet in the dark and we could see the sparks arcing between the leads that run over the inlet manifold.

My car addiction started in 2004 when I was 17.

My first car was a Peugeot 405 which i learned to drive in.

When I turned 18 I was given a 306 HDi for my 18th birthday from my parents on the condition I passed my degree.

Image

I then took a real interest in cars and it all went wrong from there.

My Citroen addiction started in 2005.

I had always been a fan of the XM and when a V6 Manual in Black became available I bought it from citroenxm (Paul) with a noisey gearbox.

Image

After I'd had the gearbox reconditioned 4 or 5 times and it still not being quite right I decided to sell it as I'd had enough.

The day I sold it I put a deposit on a V6 Xantia. It was a series 1 in Mauritius Blue that had 122k miles on the clock. This car was immaculate and drove perfectly.

I sold it after around 6 months as it was sitting still most of the time whilst I was at uni.

The car was in Horsham in Sussex, so I flew down and drove it home.

That's how my dad became impressed with the V6 Xantia and we ended up with the silver one too.

Weeks after selling the V6 Xantia I was lucky enough to stumble across a Series 1 V6 24v XM for sale in Wrexham.

The car hadn't been running for a long time as the seller was convinced that it was stolen.

It was offered to me for £100.

Dad and I travelled down to Wrexham in North Wales from Glasgow in what must have been one of the heaviest rain showers I've ever seen.

We towed the XM home on the trailer behind dad's Discovery.

When we got it home I ran a load of checks on the car.

The reason the seller thought the car was stolen is because the registration number that was etched onto the windows didn't match the number on the car.

I ran an HPi check and noticed that the number plate on the windows was the original registration the car was given, when it was 2 years old the car had a private plate put on it. When this was removed it was given a different number plate.

Due to time constraints I spent a lot getting this one road worthy again. It was then I decided I was never paying a garage to do work I could do again.

To date, I do still own this car.

In January 2007 I managed to have an accident in my 306 as an old lady decided to emergency brake on a slip road in the ice for no reason.

When I braked, my ABS went nuts and I ended up sliding into her which left my 306 looking like this:

Image

After much searching I found another 306 HDi that had been written off due to a side impact.... This was in Doncaster so we travelled down and towed it home. It was a great find as it was china blue also....

So i parked them both up and swapped the bits over:

Image

I then had the necessary checks done and put it back on the road.

Whilst repairing my 306 I bought a Series 2 V6 Xantia.

Image

Before I sold it though, I managed to get a picture of my fleet:

Image

After that had gone I bought a Land Rover and had nothing but problems with it, needed a new engine, propshaft, etc etc so I sold that too this year.

Image

I decided shortly after buying this I wanted a Land Rover so I sold this to Deian.

When the engine on my Discovery went porous I ended up using my 24v XM as a daily driver.

It got to the point in 2007 where I was guessing if it was going to start or not when I came out of work.

The AA got fed up with me calling them and then started to charge me so the XM became a daft idea to run every day.

We managed to find a Xantia Activa with 37k miles on Auto Trader for £1295 in Southampton. We flew down and collected it and drove it home.

Image

This was a totally immaculate car with 2 owners from new. A very worthwhile buy.

After this I finished stripping the other 306 and it went to the scrappy to be weighed in:

Image

I then found another two Xantia V6's for sale, The Blue V6 that is now owned by Paul (citroenxm) and the Green V6 that is now owned by Lexi. I'm glad they both found good homes!

Image

Image

I then decided that the mileage on the Activa was going up to quickly in every day use and I wanted to keep the mileage low so I managed to find a Series 2 V6 24v XM for £250, I bought this in Bradford and we towed this one home too.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

I ran this car for around 6 months.

It then started to give me grief, the alternator died, the radiator burst and gave me nothing but grief.

I couldn't source a new radiator and wasn't prepared to pay Citroen prices so had this one recored.

Whilst I had this in bits I strayed away from the French stuff and bought a Golf R32 in December 2008.

Image

Image

Image

This was a great car, 3.2 in-line V6 (VR6 Engine), 4 wheel drive, DSG gearbox with paddle shift. It was an awesome car to drive and was the quickest car I'd driven.

I then sold this in December 2009 for more then I paid for it.

At the moment I'm currently running my 306 HDi as my every day car whilst the Activa sits in the shed keeping good.

I'm waiting on an XM Exclusive arriving in the UK from Malaysia in April too, and there's the possibility of another Series 1 V6 24v XM too.

There's also an Activa that I bought for £150 and sold as I preferred the black V6 XM.

On a side note from the Citroens, I'm also a big fan of the Land Rover Series 2B Forward Controls.

And there's another in bits too:

So that's where I'm up to at the moment, everybody I speak to seems to think it's nuts at the age of 23 but it's good fun!

Forgot one bit....

In July 2007 my girlfriends headgasket on the Rover 25 she had (K series engine) was showing signs of going so we sold that.

As I'd just finished repairing the 306 we sold the Rover and she used that.

When she was parked up in February 2009 someone then went into the side of the 306:

Image

The insurance company wrote it off again and they let me keep the car.

I then repaired it again and am still using it.

As Cheryl wanted a bigger car we used the money from the insurance and bought her a W reg Xantia HDi Exclusive.

Don't have any pictures of that one yet.

Think that's all for now.

Didn't realise you were also one of the 20 somethings David! About to enter that category myself in a couple of weeks!
Fair old amount of cars  I'm sure I'd being doing the same if I had my own bit of land, struggling at the moment with a big old Roadless tractor and a Xantia parked out the front of our house

Great stuff David!

I thought I was bad with 11 cars owned at 22 and 4 and half years driving!

Nothing as new as the R32 though.
