Knocking from front on Xantia V6

Post by DHallworth »

My mum has a Xantia V6 with 42k miles on it.

When driving on uneven or rough surfaces slowly it makes a knocking noise which seems to come from the front.

It's been MOT'd 3 times since this and hasn't had any advisories for play in ball joints or anything like that.

I'm going to get it up on the ramp on Wednesday and have a look around it, just wondered if anybody could suggest anything to look for.

Thanks in advance.

David.

Hello David, fancy seeing you on here :D

Probably a drop link causing your noise, not very expensive or difficult to fit.

That's what I wondered about Peter, but my 306 got an MOT advisory for having play in it when it was doing the same!

I'll have a good poke/play with it now the ramp is installed.

Inner wish bone REAR bush wear can do this!

Bottom ball joints also, when the MOT does a test on them they jack the car up, and in effect the wheels drop, which can tighten up the joint, and it could very well be slack in the "Normal" position....

Cheers Paul...

Will have a look at that.

I've just been told theres a lot of knocking going on at the back too.

Got my Activa to do bushes on, V6 to sort out and the girl friends HDi to do odds and sods on too.

It's going to be a busy few weekends I think!

On mine the engine mount that is stabilises the transverse position at the top adhesive had partially come away and did not knock but made it jerky on similar roads, think the suspension problems mentioned above are more likely but this is an extra thing for you to look at, though it looks like you have your hands full already

Ooooooooo citrov6 that reminds me, David, also, on mine, the lower REAR Engine mount disintigrated under an oil leak, which led to a loud CLUNK knock, I could actually rock the engine back and forth on it and the engine mount metal knocked against the bolt!
