checking engine mounts

how can i tell if any of the engine mounts are knackered. comments gratefully received.

Try to move the engine against the mountings. The lower one looks like a doughnut with a steel outer and a central bolt holding it in a bracket. As the rubber ages, the central bolt is allowed to move too much against the disintegrating rubber. Also it has been known that breakage can occur either in the outer ring or the bracket. On the upper mounting, there are two rubber pads bonded on either side of the bracket which can become displaced.
