free wheeling

Unread post by hazel davies »

I have an 18 month old citroen multispace...........since i have had it every now and then it 'freewheels' so to speak and i can travel over half a mile with no acceleration......reporting this to the dealer they looked at it and said it was the carpet (i am a woman so got THAT LOOK ONLY A WOMAN RECEIVES FROM A MECHANIC) anyway it still does it and reporting it on the service day the mechanic said he didn't know why.........it still does it and i wonder if any one else has this problem..nb the dealer had since gone broke Wyatts of Poole so not a small one..........

Hi and welcome to our world !
Not quite sure what you mean by freewheel ? Has the engine cut out , is it an auto and has dropped out of drive , has the power just dropped and it won't accelerate ?
Basically , more info required please

sorry perhaps its not self explanatory.............i mean that the engine keeps going and drives by itself with no foot on the accelerator............
it is not automatic and this happens in 2 3 4 or 5 so nothing to do with going too fast.........it just runs by itself...........i usually brake and bring it back in to line........
thanks for your reply hope this is the info you can understand
i just wondered if this was common as i cant get a answer...........

Ah , you mean sticking throttle ! Just to be sure , it doesn't have cruise control by any chance ?

What engine is in it ? has the dealer updated the engine management software ? how often does it do it ? I know it sounds silly but take the carpet mat out for a while & see if it still does it.

Welcome to the forums :)

That has to be covered by the warranty and looks as though it could potentially be dangerous.

See this Toyota Recall article (Beeb)

Also the Ctroen C1 recall

Plus the Friday the 13th crash

Very likely a simple fix, a sticking throttle potentiometer or stepper motor but it needs attention soonest.

thanks for your replies.............
It doesn't stick ......you can take your foot off the pedal and it just goes along by itself...........
trouble is its not constant and happens perhaps once a week..............
will take the carpet out but as the throttle doesn't stick it seems as though it must be so,mething else.
Its the Berlingo Multispace XTR.....
I guess I will have to persue this but as i said our dealer is bust so dealing with people who are not really interested in me is difficult.........

The pedal itself may not be sticking , but the throttle potentiometer it's connected to by a cable maybe sticking or at fault.
This is a safety issue though , so if dealers are showing reluctance to help , contact Citroen UK , especially if it's under warranty.

Is this happening when the engine is running at a slow speed such as around 1000 rpm? If so then its caused by the engine management system speeding up the engine to avoid it stalling. I had a 1.6 HDi Berlingo which did the same, it becomes a little annoying when moving through slow traffic the only way to get around it is to use a lower gear or dip the clutch early.

Having said that Wheeler (who is very knowledgeable) mentions a software update so it may be worthwhile contacting a dealer as the update may alter the running parameters of the engine and sort the problem out.

Hi Hazel

I must admit Wyatts at Poole were quite helpful before they bit the dust.

Try EssanJays on Willis Way Ind Est they are an indipendant and i believe one of the lads working there was the head mechanic at Wyatts in Poole.
