Still got the same strange noise from Xantia 90Hdi

I've had this car for 6 months and covered 10500 miles, probably 7000 of these in long runs from Bergerac France to Birmingham and back (best part of 1800 miles including running about in UK).

After a few weeks I began to notice a growling noise that sometimes (not always) came on when the engine was hot. You really only hear it when ticking over. It is superimposed onto engine noise and stops the instant that you turn ignition off.

This noise has perhaps got a bit worse, but not to an extent that I'm too worried. But I do want to know what it might be.

It is not cooling fans.

I've asked before on here but not really found anyone who can say for sure what this noise might be.

I'm very reluctant to start stripping things down with the risk of messing something up unnecessarily. And I'm too old to mess about outside in this weather.

So please could anyone help?

BTW; very happy at another incident-free lovely 1800 mile journey, returned from Brum with new Tumble Dryer in the car (and it's not an estate!). Plus a new 4' long 7" diameter telescope and loads of proper cheese and the obligatory Bisto and Marmite etc etc for fellow ex-Pats! A real carfull; ran at 37psi front / 33 psi rear, beautifl ride.

Mine's still doing it too....

I wonder if it might be the fuel filter housing - sometimes at switch on the fuel system vibrates as the pump primes - I've heard that this is a combination of the pump and filter housing, with the filter housing amplifying any vibration from a slightly dodgy pump. I've never got into any diagnosis, as it's usually dark and I'm just at work or ready for tea when it's doing it. One day, perhaps I'll do something about it!

Aux belt flapping due to a worn Auto Tensioner giving in??

They useually flap between the crank and air con pump, and can cause some strange noises - is the noise engine rev related or car moving related?
