We`ve covered the suspensions of Cits here many times. We even have DS and Traction owners. What about the other two? Any story details or pics from anyone ?

Not forgetting JCB lexi,

Some of their stuff use Citroen suspension elements.

I was once in ECP when a bloke walked in after BX Spheres. Same ones as on his JCB apparantly 8-)

My old BMW 528i E28 had a brake sphere so add that to the list.

So what models did Rolls put the Citroen licensed suspension on? Did they elaborate on it with better or additional parts?

I believe it was on all of them from the Shadow onwards, certainly on the rear, not sure about the front.

The Shadows used two accumulators for brakes IIRC. At one stage, they also had a primitive precursor to the Activa system, but it was dropped.

I love the multiple redundancies of the RR hydraulics - even down to twin HP pumps.

i have seen it on the square slab mass production ROLLY POLLY's, i belive it was just for self levelling non of the up's and down's though, and no manual hight lever,

they have a hydraulic tank with a sight glass/window on the side, and a metal lable statting suspension courtesy of Andre Citroen,

That`s amazing Malcom. You never see these things about Rolls Royce as they are shrouded in mystery being a non commercial product.

Dont forget about the old Merc S-class range toppers, which used hydraulics suspension too .... I cant remember which year they were now, must be around the early to late 1980's, on the large engine ones.

A shadow does have rear shperes, two as far as i know. With self leveling suspenion on the rear. They are located in the boot behind the rear trim, in where the spare wheel is located if i remember rightly.

We used to have a shadowII, they do ride very softly with good spheres. The front is equally as soft, so compliments the rears nicely.

The Merc rears are another silly design; if they'd eaten humble pie and used Citroën's established parts there wouldn't be so many floating around with droopy rumps. MB spheres and height correctors aren't cheap, and the former are essentially ungassable.

Ditto for Alfa and the Selespeed trans - possibly still worth converting to run a green sphere!

I'm sure I saw some green spheres hiding under the arches of a modified Range Rover on Top Gear once.

Range Rovers use air suspension, huge air bags under the wheel arches.

I didnt think many Mercs had spheres, only the model i described. Ive not seen any for years. Was it only the V12 or something had it?

I know we had one in for suspension work about 12 years ago. It was here for a few weeks by the time it was finished. Cant remember now if they were Citroen spheres.

It was the LWB saloons either sixes or eights; not sure about coupés. Spheres are black and slightly different in shape; they're mounted to the chassis underside and remotely feed the suspension cylinders.

Benz SLS (self levelling system) (rear only) used spheres, struts and was hydropnuematic seen first on I think w123 class sedans and wagons. Earlier models W108/109 particularly the 300SEL 6.3 used air suspension.
