Left St Albans Hertfordshire at 2.10am arrived Ballachulish Bridge Hotel (Glencoe Scotland) at 8.15 am including a 45 min breakfast stop at Hamilton services Glasgow.[V] Not big or clever but the wedding was worth the risk. Saw one plod car at side of M74, occupants asleep with newspapers over their heads [:p] Couldn't tell you the exact distance (c.500) but it's always your average speed that counts! Your speedo will nearly always over-indicate your speed. 94 zx td 100K+.

I once covered 278 miles in 2hours 45 minutes in my old Xsara 1.4i! Left at 8pm, was home about 11.40. I've never recorded a higher average speed since!

On the day you did 115MPH in your ZX you must have been going downhill with the wind behind you. The 'Verdict' in Diesel Car Magazine gave it an excellent write up, but in the test results gave its top speed as 110. It also recorded that at 70mph the vehicle was actually doing 67.4 and the odometer when it recorded 100 miles had actually done 98. You can check your own ZX by using the figure of 25.3MPH for every 1000RPM. In this way I've calculated that when my Xantia 2.1TD [27.3MPH/1000RPM] shows 70MPH, it is in fact doing 67.5 and when a 100 miles is recorded it has covered only 97. The sad fact is that when I like to think it's giving me 42mpg, it's only returning 40.5.

I can confirm the 115mph speed in a ZX TD. I was following (or should I say being slowed down by [;)]) a popular member of this forum in his at the time, and my speedo in the Bmw showed 115mph, and was confirmed by him afterwards, but Ofcourse all speedo's are innaccurate at higher speeds.
He had to pull over when clouds of black smoke exited the back of it however, a trick im told, developed by citroen to inject neat diesel into the engine as a safety measure when the engine is overloaded.
The engine was stock, having been previously detuned back to original after a boost increase, for mpg reasons.
These speeds were obviously achieved on private roads.[:I]

There was an interesting article in Diesel Car (154 05/2001) regarding Climatronic in VAG cars. This system requires a large no. of variables to function properly. By pressing control keys in a certain order (similar to the vulcan nerve pinch to shut down a hung PC) you can access 54 different readouts, including vehicle speed. No mention is made of how the latter is measured but assuming it to be more accurate, the speedo overindicated by 4-6%.
