Noise Quiz: I name that Tune in...

Post by boristhespie »

Okay this is in another thread but I thought it woudl get more thought if I put it here on its own.

Mods can delete if you think this is too much.

What is this engine noise from top right part of engine (C5 Hdi 110) Behind brake reservoir?

Seems to be perfectly on topic - but the sound beats me

Clearly the humming sound is odd to me - buth then again my hands-on experience with HDI's leaves much to wish.
It wont be an external coolant leak as that would show as steam in this cold weather.

I'd rather leave the explanation of this to other guys with experience on later engine generations

Sounds like the magnetic field from the alternator interfering with the camera.

If the noise that concerns you is the humming/buzzing noise that sounds rather like an electric hover-mower (you've ruled out the radiator fan?), then I think my analogy is your answer - alternator fan; either damaged or some foreign body caught in it.

I thought the alternator was at the front and slightly on the left?

This is right up against the window/cabin at the back right. Beside the flat round thing behind the brake fluid reservoir but I don't know if it is that big round thing.

Sounds very odd, ive no idea what that might be. Has it just started doing it?

Someone once mentioned that all HDi C5s have pre-heaters for cold days, i didnt think they did and thought only exclusive Xantia HDis had one, but it could be that if they do have one ...

My car has a hum coming from that area, but its when i turn the car off. It hums for around 5 minutes, slowly gets quieter then stops. Its more of an electronic hum.

That would be the hydraulic valve emitting noise after you leave the car and the height then is a bit too high.

I wonder if this odd noise could be the exact same hydraulic issue ?

The explanation is simple :
After you leave the car the suspensin jumps up in height caused by less load.
The hydraulic valve then opens to get the car back in correct height.
The opposite happens when you enter the car.

Its odd because its the first C5 we have had which makes this noise, and we have had 4 now. Though that would make sense and i know they do do that, it does come from under the plastic cover on the passenger side, just behind the battery. Maybe its the same noise on ours Boristhespie, just worse?

Have you checked the LDS level?

Never had any such noises on mine. The only one, and I only became aware of it fairly recently as I usually have the CD player on, is an electric motor sound from under the dash on the driver's side, whirrs for a few seconds a couple of minutes after the ignition is turned off. It is very discrete though.

Chris, I am certain that mine has a pre-heater in the cooling system as it heats up very quickly even on the coldest mornings.

Yes all C5s have that noise, its the heating/ventillation flaps closing. If you sit in the car for a few minutes, just as the your mileage dissapears there are even more noises of vents closing and things turning off.

Interesting, i wonder if they do have them then, they are very quick to reach temperature ...

that seams a very difficult noise to track down, the inside fan is not making it?

an old trick i learned of my dad was to put a screwdriver on the part you think is making the noise, put your ear on the other end and you can hear the internals of the part

Used your old trick and it seems to be coming from this. The Screwdriver is pointing to it. What is it?
