406 Heated Mirrors

Hi Guys,

I've just been out for a drive and whilst waiting for the demist to clear the windows I noticed the drivers side mirror steaming. On closer inspection the mirror was warm to the touch and there was an orange light on the electric control knob.

Is this heating automatically controlled? If not how do I control it?

The car is a 51 plate 406, GLX I think.

The heated mirrors turn on with the heated rear window switch. They stay on until you turn the rear heated window off, on some cars that turns off on its own after 10-15 minutes.

Also if you have heated windscreen washer jets, they turn on at the same time too.

I thought it might be that but the light on the control stayed on even once the rear screen heater was off. Although the mirror was cooler, but I put that down to the air flow cooling them as I had driven in the meantime.

I'm off out again now, will have a look and see what happens this time round.

OK it looks like it is the rear window heater that controls them and the light on the mirror knob is nothing to do with it.

Yeah thats usually how it works, though im not sure what the light on the controls would be for

I thought the small amber light on the mirror "joystick" was to indicate the mirrors were being heated.

I know they are usually automatically switched on if you use the heated rear screen.

Try (very gently!) pressing the control joystick down, perhaps you can turn it on / off independently too.

@spider, tried that first off as that was my intial thought, that I'd somehow managed to catch the button, but it seemed to have no effect.

Even though the light stayed on, the heating effect seems to disapear once the rear demist is off.

It wouldn't surprise me if there are some crossed wires under that panel, as it has been replaced in the past. The last owner was somewhat heavy handed on all accounts, some of the buttons have either been replaced (by a main dealer) or don't work.
