XM V6-24v (4HP20) Starter Motor Problems

Post by xmexclusive »

Hi All

Anyone point me towards how to go about sorting iffy starter motor problems on a late V6-24v XM.
Thought there might be similarities with the Xantia that uses the same engine.
Car is well used , 170k but seems to have a reasonable maintenance history.
Seem to recall that there were some posts about modifying the motor feed to be more direct.
Is the starter unique to that engine?

Any help appreciated.

Yes the starter is unique to the ES9J4
But common to all cars that use the engine: Xantia, XM, C5, C8, 406, 806 etc.

There are often new starters on ebay, also available from Wood Auto.

Thank you for the replies.
It will help a lot to plan what I do and take with me.
Not one of mine so problem has been relayed to me by phone.
I have to go to the car and hopefully sort in one go.

Regards

All probs obviously may not be the same. Mine was cured for the moment by putting a heavier wire and ring from the two pin connecter at A/C going to smaller starter terminal. Did away with connector and hard wired to existing wire that goes back to relay at front n/side area The guys pointed out that there was high resistance in that circuit and looks like they were right.

Starting well now in low temps.

In my dim and distant days of Citroening the CX 2.5 DTR was a right git to
get started needing the full juice out of even the biggest badass battery and
any resistance scuppered it in it's tracks.

This problem with the DTR was so well known among fellow sufferers that a
dodge was passed around where a tiny single feed from the strigger exciter
could be undone directly above the battery and touched onto the positive post
of the battery. You needed to put the ignition on to run the rest of proceedings
once the car fired. This was great unless you had a Cx with the typically gone
off the boil handbrake adjustment and took to parking in gear...

yep, damn near killed a pal of mine when his CX estate lunged forward upon
starting after being left in gear and ran him into a carpark armco cracking
his pelvis in two places whilst crushing him as the soft filling in a sandwich.
 Where's this going?

The only solution was to direct conventional relay feed the shortest run
possible from the battery to the starter triggered by the existing exciter.
Same fix needed here on David's car.
