Differences in HP pumps

Post by admiral51 »

Have been following the thread in the Activa section about the weak pump but not wishing to dilute that particular topic decided to start a new one :)

How many variants are there for normal/non hydractive HP pumps(anti sink)

I have a 1.9d n/a im breaking but looking at its numerous feeds/outlets it looks different from the one in my 1.9TD in the areas that the pipes seem to go.It could be that the mounting position/angle is different that makes it seems totally different but all thoughts welcome :)

According to Laser there are eight on S1's alone.

Those two should be completely compatible!

Has the 98 LX TD Got Air Con?? If so the HP Pump will be up top above the altinator..

I guess the 96 D wont have, but it should have anti sink, so you should find that the two pumps WILL inter change.. the main difference I learnt is the VSX and V6 Pumps differ from the TD Pumps... Petrol engines use a different size PULLY, But my guess is a Petrol LX Pump would do the job, but a longer belt would possibly be needed to go round the larger pully..

So in summery, I think its only VSX/Hydractive Pumps that should bot be used on LX / SX systems..

Where did you get that from Paul? Looking on Laser there's no mention of a Hydractive pump being different unless the car is a V6 :?

I had this discussion the other day elsewere... the unless Im getting mixed up and confusing the VSX is NOT the same as the V6 Pump..

So a VSX hydraulic pump can be put on a Non Hydractive LX/SX car??

But a V6 cannot be put on a LX/SX/VSX car?

Just to clarify the situation here guys :)

Im looking at the feaseability of putting the pump from my 1.9d n/a onto my 1.9TD both have A/C and are anti sink.
It just looks to me that the input/output on the pumps are different but that could just be the way the pump body is aligned/rotated on its mounting bracket.
The reason for swapping them is that i know the pump on the 1.9d n/a was serviced/reconditioned before i bought the car.Best i take some pics of the engine bay of both and post up for opinions :)

Both cars are S1 cars Richard

And yes Richard both compliment each other very nicely in your new avatar 8)

According to Laser there are seven different anti-sink pump's on a S1 dependent upon engine and whether A/C is fitted, so if I'm reading Laser correctly LX/SX/VSX pumps will be interchangeable if the donor/recipient cars have the same engine and are both fitted with/without A/C.

The V6 pump is in addition to the seven and unique to that engine/not compatible with other models.

Just to put a little light on.

There are lots of different Xantia style pumps.

Basic types are,

6 cylinder petrol
6 cylinder diesel
6 + 2 cylinder petrol
6 + 2 cylinder diesel
6 + 2 cylinder XM 2.1 TD
6 + 2 cylinder XM 2.5 TD
6 + 2 cylinder XM 2.0 petrol turbo (also fits activa)
6 + 2 cylinder Xantia V6 (only fits the V6)
6 + 2 cylinder HDI

In with these pumps there are some slight variants, this can be pulley size, angle of the pipes or distance from the pump to the back of the pulley.

Most pumps are the same inside. In other words, if it looks the same and the belt runs in line, then it will work.

The 6 cylinder pump runs with the old fashioned BX system, ie the car has a Flow distributor valve to control the pressure and flow to the steering pinion valve (150-)

The 6 + 2 pump has the 2 pistons to pressurise the suspension and braking system and the 6 piston side has it's own internal regulator that controls the 150- pressure to the steering at full flow. (no flow valve needed)

The big main difference is the Xantia V6 pump, this pump looks like a standard pump, but it has no internal regulator for the steering. The regulator sor the steering is up and attached to the N/S inner wing. Fit this pump to a standard Xantia and you will over pressurise the pinion and blow fluid out all over.
The Xantia V6 pump is easy to identify, as it has the pulley held onto a hub with 4 x bolts.

Regards
Martin.

Just a quick point,

NEVER Seen an XM 2.1 with a 6+2 pump..

Did they come in quite late on them?

Paul.

It was the last of the XM's that used the Xantia system, by then they were only using the 2.0 petrol turbo and the 2.1 and 2.5 turbo diesels.

We allways have to do a double check when someone is ordering a pump for a late type XM as it is easy to get spomethging wrong.

Martin.
