One of my favourite cars the 407, very nice, smart cars, look great.
Cant really comment on them for reliablity as ive not owned one, though i plan to at some point. However it uses the same engine as the facelift C5s and a lot of the dash and electronic bits too. We have a 2.0HDi C5 with the 138 bhp engine which im sure will be the one in the 407 SW your looking at. Its a fantastic unit, excellent pull, fantastically smooth and refined and great on fuel too, so far we are all very impressed with ours, but we have only had it two months so cant comment agian on reliability.
They do lose their value but so long as your not paying over the odds for it and its not almost new you should be ok to not lose too much money on it. My advice would be to choose one around 2005/2006 year as that will lost the bulck of its value now, probably be worth somewhere in the region of £4-5K depending on milage? Best time to buy a car in my opinion, when they have lost most of what they will lose.
Ive not heard anything too drastic about reliability on the 2.0HDi 16v, they are used in many many cars, Focus, Mondeos, and i think some Volvos to name just a few. So they must be fairly reasonable
Yes they can have fap filter issues, but usually when the fluid is left to run out or the car doesnt get good runs to allow the FAP to work. I give ours a good blast every now and again in the hope that it will help keep this at bay. Ive just had a quick search there and found some issues, but not things ive not heard before. Though that is one reason i prefer the earlier C5s with the 2.0 8v HDi engine, as its non FAP
But, for goodness sake, dont look on the honest john forum, especially at the C5s, it will put you off buying any car made after the mid to late 1990s
