Peugeot 405 problem

Unread post by Toby_HDi »

For a while now my sisters 405 has been playing up. Every so often it would start kangerooing, losing power, cutting out at junctions and revving itself up and down when the clutch was dipped. Other times it would run fine.

She had an auto electrician look at it and he said it was either a sensor or the coil pack. I had a suspicion it was the coil pack. She decided to bite the bullet and buy a coil pack for it and I fitted it this afternoon. Now when you start, it starts to idle roughly and like it will stop again. However, if you rev it slightly it settles down and idles nice and smoothly.

The coil pack seems to have made a difference but due to the issues starting I'm wondering if there could be another issue. Muck in the fuel? The fuel gauge does go up and down at times. I've suggested sticking in some V-Power and some injector cleaner and seeing if that makes a difference but I thought I'd throw it out here and see if there are any other suggestions. Its a lovely car, and seems a shame not to get it sorted.

Nearly forgot, it's the 1.6 XU5 petrol.

Its not the stepper motor is it?

I've had no experiance of a stepper motor problem but from what I've read they seem to cause the symptoms you describe when they go dodgy.

Maybe someone with more experiance of these things can advise.

Cheers.

i agree with uncle buck,

first port of call would be remove the stepper motor give it a blast out with carb cleaner, stick it back on if it runs fine now it will need a new stepper motor, as they dont like it up em (carb cleaner that is),

The throttle position switch was actually replaced.

Am I to believe the stepper motor is a different thing? Where is this likely to be mounted on the XU5's throttle body?

Right, another go with the carb cleaner today. Cleaned the pushrod and the port in the throttle body.

Started it up and it cranked whilst pushing through the carb cleaner but then fired up with no throttle (usually had to give some throttle to get it to start) but it went u[p to 3k rpm and stayed there for a min or so before coming back down to 1.5k. I can't even move the pushrod of the motor with my fingers when it's off the car so I'm assuming its really sticky and gone completely.

Looks like a new one needed
