Renault Espace 3 Glowplug Disaster

Unread post by nesssalmon »

My car - Grand Espace 2.2 td 1998 'S' Reg

Hi all

I have spent the last day and a half trying to change my glow-plugs and whilst it was very nearly successful, ended in catastrophic failure.

I have used the suggested tools e.g 1/4 UJ socket drive, 10mm deep 1/4, 7mm socket etc.

I have snapped the top off 2 of my new plugs ( overtightened the top nut) but have managed to unscrew these successfully.

I have also snapped off 2 of the glow-plug connectors (rings) on the cars wiring loom.

I have tried to make new connectors in the limited space and almost succeeded, but have used slightly larger ring connectors which are touching the manifold.

On trying to start the car I got a strange electrical noise I think because the current going to the glow plugs is going through my manifold

So the questions are:

1) I need to take the manifold off, how hard is this and how many gaskets would I need to replace?

2) If my ring connector was touching the manifold, what kind of damage could I have caused?

3)If I remove the manifold, my plan is to find a scrapped Espace glow plug wiring loom and use that. Is this sensible?

Any help advice would be most appreciated

Thanks
Rob :D
