Just about to leave. Car has been magnificent all week. Just get in it to go to supermarkt and the coolant light and STOP came on with beeping. Has come on again. CAn't bl00dy believe it. Just about to set off.

I suspect the guy selling the car put some water into the coolant and it is cold here. Could that be the reason for the warning?

ANSWER/Reassurance NEEDED ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course if there is no or very little anti-freeze then it could have frozen which has caused a leak etc. Was that quick enough?

BEEEPING

Not heard then beep before, Ive an ongoing fault with the Flashing STOP and the RED light on the coolant guage, Tried a new lever sensor, but not cured it, Level is fine, so Dont tend to listen to it.. (For Now)

I was thinking that (freezing) as the heat guage is stuck to the left of the dial for a while.

And if it is low, what do I do? It's late no access to any c5 Citroen dealer. Is this stuff available from large supermarkets/halfords?

If it is low you can use water provided you're not seriously diluting the anti-freeze mix, a simple and crude method for checking if you have some anti freeze in there is to rub some coolant between your finger and thumb, it should feel greasy.

Before topping it up with any old sort of anti-freeze you really need to know what type is in there first to ensure they match.

Funnily enough just yesterday a neighbour/good friend called round yesterday in a panic about her VW Polo doing the very same thing as you describe, all it need was a small cup of water to top it up.

I have no way of knowing what type of antifreeze is in it. I know it has been serviced by Citroen all the time so I guess dealer stuff for a C5 HDi?

Got a Small Halfords here may pop down just in case. Don't want this thing freezing and bursting my engine.

CHECKED LEVEL WAY WAY LOW! BUGGER.

5.4 litre jobbo from Halfords will hopefully do us until south of England. Ho Ho Ho.

I did read that coolant disappearing could be due to head gasket leakage?

Au revoir mon chockos.

Fingers crossed for a safe journey, hope it all goes well for you and the car.

Coollant should be the Citroen OAT based stuff. The alternatives will reduce the life of the heater matrix. I think you can use Forte antifreeze without problems though.
