Sloppy gearstick

The gearstick on my 2000 406 is very sloppy and imprecise, is this a common fault with a known remedy ?

What engine/gearbox Dave?

That'll help us determine the cause. If it's the ML5 (fitted to the 110HDi typically) with cable change then it'll be the cables worn out.

They're expensive

oops, yes, sorry, engine might help. Its a 2L 16v petrol, I think the code is EW10J4
