xantia rear wiper

Post by hamster »

My rear wiper has recently packed up. After months of not deciding where it wants to stop or just running continuously its finally given up the ghost and doesn't work at all now.

After playing for three hours in the scrap yard on saturday to get another wiper motor and returning with a rear bumper, wiper motor, plastic boot lining, rear light cluster and varous other bits i stripped off various xantias I found the wiper motor I took of a mint (apart from the bent front wing) V reg estate with 30k on the clock didn't work in my car so i'm wondering if its not the motor that has gone but maybe something some where else.

The fuse is fine because the front wiper works ok. What valtages should i be getting accross the wires that plug in to the relay next to the motor? If I recall correclty there are 4 wires, one yellow/green and three grey wires goint into the connector which then turn blue, red, black and brown into the relay and motor. I want to get a volt meter accross some of these and check the circuit is telling the wiper to work in the first place.
Also which colours on the motor/relay can i connect straight to the battery to check it this is working correctly?

So often problems with estate tailgate mounted electrics are down to broken wires in the two rubber concertinas up by the hinges hamster.

Heiulitz, who built the estates, were mean with the wire length and they get stressed on every tailgate opening until they break. The wires themselves are not exactly top quality.

Gently pull back both contcertinas and it's an almost dead cert you'll find a wire broken and others thinking about doing the same :(

I found there were broken solder joints inside the blue relay next to the wiper motor. Dealer had quoted $300 to the PO for a replacement; I fixed the original and "ruggedised" it with some extra soldered on bracing of copper wire for basically nothing.

Mk 1 estate and mk 2 estate wiper motors ARE DIFFERENT and have OPPOSITE park positions..

Just thought Id add that incase you'd bought a Mk.1 motor.. sorry if you had not.

Wiring in the tailgate hinge area my favorite too, similar to the door area on the front door..

Customer Mk.1 sinker, open the door, switch on ignition with door open the window will come down one step! Ignition off then on, do it again, and it wont go up.. However, close the door, it behaves and will go up.. Got wires breaking up inthere, so no prizes what Ill be dooing soon when the window WONT go up at all...

Hi Hamster - I also have a V Reg Mk2 Xantia estate. Just had a new rear window fitted (long story) but guess what - my rear wiper doesn't work either.

It tried to work - managed a short move and then stopped. I have had lots of work done on the wires so will have a look at mine. If you can confirm what was wroing with yours it might help.

Why do these things happen when it is -7C and MOT is due in early Jan?

Just be aware, Series One Rear wipers, Estates, and Series 2 Rear wipers Estates PARK on opposite sides.... so are not compatible with each other...

Interesting Paul...

I noted that DickieG's new MK2 estate rear wiper was parked on the wrong side, but he said it's working OK. May have been swapped out with an earlier one, or maybe early Mk2s came with that wiper config....service.citroen now list the same part number for MK1 and 2 cars, so they must be interchangeable - except the park position will move!

Maybe it's connected with the late MK2 estates having a different wiper arm. MK1s and early MK2s (Like Richard's) have a metal wiper arm whereas the later MK2s had the same plastic arm as fitted to late Saxos, 106s and 206s.

The change occurred in 1999 but I'm not sure of the RP number when the change occurred.

My last (1999 RP 8382) estate had a metal arm which parked on the opposite side (right) to my 'new' S2 1998 one (RP 8045), I'm sure that the arm on my present car has a wider sweep than my previous car, now there's a 'sad' observation!!
