Early Mk1s, up to mid 1994 had no anti-sink mechanism, so the suspension pressure leaks away after a few hours and the suspension sinks to the bottom. We call the "sinkers". These cars generally had the Citroen badge mounted on the bonnet, not the grille and had no airbags.

Later Mk1 cars had the opposite of all of the above, the changes did not happen all at once, but over a few months of production.

Mk2 were introduced at the beginning of 1998, and have different headlights, with the grille connected to the bonnet, many changes to the electrical system, and other detail changes. These changes all happened at the same time.

Almost XantiaV6.... Anti sink actually came in EARLY 1994, Ive a Xantia, on an L 1994 plate HOWEVER, Ive found that shes a JANUARY 1994 car! Has NO Air bag system, chevrons ON THE BONNET, and HAS got Anti sink and 14" wheels too!!

Theres a huge range, made different even more with French spec cars being completey different again!! Our UK cars were specced up to get them sold.. So we can only really go on external differences..

Three eiras exsist.. Early cars, Mk.1.1 as you mentioned, no air bag, BX suspension sustem, called sinkers, chevrons on the bonnet..
Then theres the Mk.1.2 which gain Anti sink, Airbags, chevrons moved to the front grill.
Then if you want real info theres Mk.1.3 were spec changed to include standard air con OR a sunroof, 15" steel wheels instead of 14", ALLOYS Always were 15" and from 1997 R reg Mk.1 cars, these gained rear spoiler and Alloys with suede trim as a Mk.1 run out model!!

Then theres of course from 1998 the Series 2 model, which had no real revsisions made and ran out in 2001... The grill is attached to the bonnet, the headlights are slightly shorter in length and rounded off to the bonnet, front bumper has a sparper apperance, inside, new dash, Air Con Standard, steering wheel changed, electronic milage meter, etc etc...

Unfortunally, the Series 2 had a too shorter life, and was a more refined car, nicer ride, bigger car feel, better security.. shame they stopped it so soon..

If you really want you can split that further, the 15" steel wheels were introduced in the UK in September 95 on 2.0 petrol and TD's, the option of A/C or roof started in 96.

Exactly, we cannot account for Other Countries variants, as the specs caried a lot in different countries..

The only ALL countries difference will be the Revised Series 2 cars! in 1998..

I know of a couple of changes during Mk2 production: My 99 registered (but apparently 2000 model) has a UV reflective w/s and also the instrument cluster icons light up, not a blob with the icon written in it.

Yes martin, very small changes, but actual outside changes didn't happen..

Ive noticed that small change in the instrument cluster on the 2000 W HDi here, and the T reg 1999 HDi my mum has got..

I would have thought without a doubt they would be interchangeable too...

Not quite Paul, maybe from SX spec upwards?
My Late '97 Mk1 has a lot of the extra goodies to get them out of the showroom but not a rear spoiler or alloy wheels. Mine was built in Oct/Nov '97.

Another couple of subtle changes to the Mk2 Xantias are the radios, Clarions were used up until around 99/00 and after that they went back to Blaupunkt. This is something that needs to be taken into account if you ever change the steering wheel on a Mk2 as the remote control codes are different.

The late LX spec did not have alloy wheels or boot spoiler. It did have the alcantara seats which were nice, but bobbled badly.

My 2000 W Activa does not have a reflective UV screen, although it may of been replaced in the past.

Another subtle difference, the rear washer was relocated to a jet on the roof for the S2. They also deleted the bits of carpet trim that run along the edge of the parcel shelf.

Learned new things again from this thread. MK1.1 and MK1.2 was good to know 8)

This is my contribution: Engine type code is added to the chassis number (VIN/product number) in MK2.
AbangCorp wrote:VIN chassis no. : VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]
Chassis number code reading would be like:
V = Europe
F = France
7 = Citroen
X = Xantia
1 = Berline

Mine as an MK2 is like:
VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]...

V = Europe
F = France
7 = Citroen
X = Xantia
2 = Estate
RFV = 2.0i 16V
F = 5 speed
C5 II 2.0i 16V - 2005 - Estate - 103KW - EW10A - Petrol - Manual

Opps I ommitted to say that, Yes SX spec got upgraded, and herringbone base LX was deleted and got Velour from the old SX trim..
