Surely not another hydraulic pump.

Post by cox377 »

Hello all,

19.TD Xantia Estate

Hopefully most of you know of the previous hydraulic pump problems.

Went and see Malcolm IE citronut last night about this really dry noise that my engine is making. Got home and managed to get a lift into work for the last couple of days.

Cut a long story short, I got the AUX belt off tonight and it's quiet again so it's definatly something on the AUX,

I've tried to spin the pulley of the hydraulic pump and it's really hard, is this correct?

To me, it sounds like the pump is making the noise

Much appreciated as always

James the pump will be quite hard to turn by hand with hydraulic presure up,

im 200% certain its not your pump,

as its sound like a knakerd tensioner bearing or air con pump pulley,

have you tried spinning all the other pulleys yet,

I recently dealt with a similar racket on my BIL's 2.1 TD, it turned out to be the eccentric tensioner, check all of them as Malcolm says.

Let me guess, does the noise go away once you raise the revs???

If it does then it IS a slightly SLACK Aux belt, and showing signs of the auto tensioner getting weak!!!

You may notice your belt flapping between the crank and air con pullys... I doubt also very much it will be the pump pully..

HP Pumps WILL be VERY tight under system pressure while the regulator is on, as I reckon they drag a good 1/4 horse power off the engine!

Try one, remove the mounting bolts, put a 13mm bolt in the centre of the pump pully, and use a drill to turn it and watch your drill STRUGGLE!!

I've been outside for a second assessment

THe belt has started to flap between the air con and the crank

I do now think, after getting underneath again that it's from below and not the hydraulic pump.

I've had the belt off and had a good play of all the pullies.

The sound doesnt however go away when I rev it up.

My old man rekonw it's the bottom tensioner.

Paul i have had a look and a listen to Jame's jalopy,

and i was concerned of him driveing it to his home from my workshop to Heathfield, but he did make it intact,

it is a hourendous noise, and almost certaily one of the tensioners or air con pulley bearings

And she's back on the road!!! i've installed a new lower pulley and she is running sweet!! Needs a tighter belt as it's 5mm bigger than the one from Citroen and 10mm bigger than the one from GSF

Jolly good show!

Have u the inner wing cover projector missing by any chance, the lower pully can get dryed out by pleanty of water splashing onto it from these being missing!
