C5 rear suspension strut

Post by Duracell »

My 2003 C5 has just passed an MOT, but with an advisory that the N/S/R suspension strut is leaking and needs replacing - haven't had a chance to look at it yet but wondered if anybody has changed one of these. I've done one on a BX before but understand the C5 is different and I'm not sure about depressurising the hydraulics. Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Make sure it is the strut! They are designed to leak :)

What is far more likely is that the gaiter enclosing it is leaking.
The gaiter receives the leaking fluid and as it flexes pumps it back into the reservoir.

A new gaiter is around £12, a strut considerably more.

I'll have a good look at it before I do anything but the MOT was done by my local Citroen main dealer (taking advantage of their £27 MOT offer) and the tester told me that this is not unusual on the early C5's - If I find its a simple sphere joint leak or something similar it won't look good

I'd normally agree with you Malcolm but unfortunatly after looking at it this morning they may be right. The cylinder, gator and sphere are all completely dry but there is fluid discharging from the vent pipe on the gator into the cross beam and seeping out through the hydraulic block fixing bolts in the middle - I assume it shouldn't do that - is there any other reason it might be venting apart from a faulty cylinder?

Fluid should go back to the reservoir via the return pipe (from the gaiter) Has this detached or become blocked?

There is the normal return pipe from the gator but also a vent pipe which goes up into the hollow cross beam via a rubber grommet - it is open ended and is not attached to anything - the return pipe appears not to be blocked - there is no sign of fluid from the off side vent pipe but suspension movement produces fluid out of the near side

dose fluid come out of the trickle return pipe as well if you unplug it from the gaitor,

sounds like you presure seals in the susp unit/strut might be allowing more fluid passed that they should,

if you send me you chassis No. i will check on service citroen if all the seal and components are avalible indavidualy,

ps.
what mileage has the car done

There is certainly fluid in the return line but doesn't seem to be an exessive amount - car has only done 69,000 - have sent a PM with the chassis no - thanks for the help
