v6 cambelt

Post by lexi »

Searched the forum without any joy on a pictorial or info regarding changing this on V6. My V6 has low miles on clock (58k) but belt should maybe be changed as it is 11 yrs old. Does this belt not have high mileage service life though ?

The V6 belts are pretty rugged. It would be a good idea to do it anyway.
No pictures, but a few clues in my previous post I can send you a pdf for cambelt change on a 406 with the same engine. The trick is to buy the later model of tensioner and a water pump to match (or modify an earlier water pump as I did).

11 years is a long time. I believe that there is a specified mileage or duration and the replacement is advised for which ever comes first, as with oil/filter changes.

Soon after I got my V6, I phoned some citroen dealer service departments:

brrr...brrrr
[me] I have a Xantia V6 that is 8 years old and done 75,000 miles; When should I change the cambelt?
[citroen dealer 1] Umm let me go and check...
...
...
Umm we don't know, are you sure it has a timing belt?

[citroen dealer 2]Next Thursday, that will be £850. [note that I had not told him the age mileage or history of the car!!]
click!

The official interval (as far as I know) is 80,000 to 100,0000 or 10 years "depending on service conditions"

Jim covered it earlier in the year:

http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... &start=135

in the infamous words of Haynes.... engine removed for clarity

I believe a lot of the costs are for the tensioners which are a bit dear....

'Fraid not Lexi :( One thing you can do, being it is your car, is to assess the condition of the rollers and take a decision on reusing them. If they run smoothly then they will likely be OK but keep an open ear. I did just that.

Replace the water pump as a matter of course and update to the later ES9J4S tensioner (as on the VVT C5) as these are a magnitude easier to set up, as you just align two arrows. To use this tensioner, you'll also need the ES9J4S water pump. {Edit: Sorry as already said by xantia_v6. Sorry I missed that bit, skimming the earlier posts  )

You can use the old cambelt as a skipping rope

Even with the engine in-situ, access is fair and no worsse really then a 1.9TD. It helps to have an engine crane and lift the engine up on it's lifting eyes to do the job.
