Leather seat care ?

Post by HDI »

Looking for recommendations on the best way to treat and care for leather seats ? Although the seats in my Exclusive are looking very good for their 160 K miles it's occured to me that they must need some sort of treatment to make them last as long as possible.

I use the Autoglym Leather Care Cream regularly and it seems to work well enough. It leaves the seats a bit dull at first so I choose a time when soon I'll have a car full of passengers and they do the final polish for me :D

Autoglym also do a leather cleaner that should be used before the cream if the seats are dirty.

Have a look at http://www.liquidleather.com - loads of options depending on the condition of your leather. I've used their products on my 406 coupe and the leather really came up brilliantly. Their leather air freshners are brilliant for keeping the luxury smell of new leather!! (and no, I'm not on commission :D )

I'll second Gliptone. used it cover up some scuffs on the old coupe leather and really look after it, every time car was washed it was gliptoned. I got a 5 litre tub of it and did a group buy on the coop forum and used the dregs on mine and it lasts ages. smell sticks to your skin like and is best applied over a warm night if you do it on the steering wheel so it doesn't leave it slippy!

Whenever I have had a car with leather seats, I allways have used Dubbin, this seems to do the job nice and keeps the water out.

From good old wiki.

Dubbin is a wax product used to soften, condition and waterproof leather. It consists of natural wax, oil and tallow.

It is different from shoe polish, which is used to impart shine and colour to leather.

Dubbin has been used since medieval times. In the 20th century, dubbin was regularly used by amateur football players in the United Kingdom, to waterproof leather football boots.

The name 'dubbin' is a contraction of the gerund "dubbing", describing the action of applying the wax to leather.

Ongoing conjecture abounds about whether the constituents of dubbin promote rotting of the natural fibre stitching used to attach leather pieces together. There are centuries of experience that suggests it is safe, but selected pieces of literature have demonstrated some deleterious effects on high–order cellulose structures by bacteria which survive and propagate in the amino acids and fats contained in tallow, one of the chief ingredients of dubbin.

Dubbin can also be used as a moisturiser and chain lubricant.

Regards.
Martin.

I'm amazed you use dubbin on car seats !! That stuff is foul ! I tried using it once on a leather bike jacket , it was sticky for weeks and smelt like a knackers yard !!

It all depends upon how you put it on, you have to use a little and rub it well in.

Its hard work but look at saddles, they last for years with this stuff.

Saddle Soap is used on Saddles that is not Dubbin but Pure Glycerine Soap.

I use on my leather interior & sofa at home, cheap and very effective.

Also break a piece off and use to wash hands and face, leaves skin very soft. :D
