Peugeot 406, where is teh fan switch.

Post by daveh31 »

Hello, a newbie here but I suspect I'll be visiting this site quite a lot. I have just changed car, a 406, late 99 facelifted model with the 2l 16v engine. I bought it quite cheaply because it has a number of niggly faults, however, one is rather serious. The radiator fan doesn't kick in, thinking its the switch, I went out and bought one thinking it'd be a 10 minute job to change it and top-up with coolant. However, despite an extensive search I just cannot find it, can someone please enlighten me ?.
TIA

Hi Dave, welcome to the forum :D

The fans are controlled by the Aircon via a Brown Bitron Sensor in the thermostat housing. This won't be the problem as a failing Bitron causes the fans to run constantly at top speed.

There is a complex of three relays that control the fan speed switching. In slow mode the fans are run in series and if there is a problem with either the relays or one fan motor has packed up, they won't run in slow mode. Disconnect the Bitron sensor and they should ruin at top speed. If only one runs, then either it's a relay problem or one fan motor has failed.

A very common problem is a burned connection to one of the relays. Pull them out (they should be located on a triangular panel behind the grille between the fans) and check the connections in the relay bases.

It's the same as on the Citroen Xantia in essence. Have a look in the Citroen area of this forum for lots more detail, look for posts on the subject by Clogzz, our resident fan specialist.

hi jim, now i'm confused. :? The thermostat housing contains a temp sensor that I think feeds the temp gauge, The part I've bought is called a radiator fan switch made by FAE and their p/n is 37580. It's a bit like a brass screw in plug (circa M18 thread) with 2 spade thingies poking out the opposite end. I'd have thought it screws into teh block somewhere but i'm damned if i can see where.

heres what it looks like (last piccy)
