A mysterious squeak.

Unread post by Chlorate »

There's been a horrible squeaky noise coming from the general area of the alternator belt on my ZX since I put it back together as well as the occasional squeal of the belt slipping. At first I figured it was the belt tensioner bearings knackered.
So I replaced the tensioner with a shiny new one, and yes the bearings were indeed busted. But that didn't stop the squeaky noise.

I'm wondering whether it's a symptom of power steering pump failure or alternator bearings or if it's just that the belt is a bit too loose.
The steering has felt a little heavier lately, but it's hard to tell.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks guys.

Is the belt running out of alignment ? I had this same problem with my HDI and after replacing the belt , tensioner and scratching half my hair out I eventually discovered that some muppet in the past had refitted the hydraulic pump out of alignment ! Corrected that and there was silence :)

these o rib al ribed belts do need to be very tight compaired to the good old V belts, so it might be woth adjusting it up just a bit more before you go looking for other thuings at fault
