If fitting one of these boxes to your car you'll have to inform your insurance company as they are an easy spot for a insurance assesor to find a way of not paying out in the event of a prang and don't forget that if the prang is a serious one the car will be impounded by the Police so you won't have the opportunity to remove the box,,,,,,,,,,

Hi Paul

Ive had very in depth talks with some insurance people about this and this is how it stands;

If it was not on the car when it rolled off the production line the insurance company has to know or they WILL use it to back out of a claim and render you uninsured! and lets say you run someone over, (i do hope it will never happen to anyone) but your car will be impounded by the police and they will go over everything with a fine toothcombe, from your mobile phone records and if you have had an arguement with swmbo before going to work to the fuel you were using and the pressure of your tyres keeping the vehicle for weeks but more likely months like they did with our lorry when unfortunatly a co worker of mine hit and killed a pedestrian (he was cleared of all blame) they will look deliberatly for anything to get you with.
Even genuine optional extras like alloy wheels bought from the dealer could give the insurance company all they need to pull the plug on you, go ahead with the tuning box by all means, i hear they work well but please be very carefull and tell you insurance company everything, it isnt worth the risk these days.

Just declare it on the insurance, probably cost pennies. no big deal really :wink:

Lets be realistic here, a derv tuning box wont make a xantia turn into a supercar..

Oh absolutly right yes but its nothing to do with the power, its to do with the sort of person that wants more power and how much of a risk they are, the insurance is always looking for ways to not pay up and to get more money out of you, cost me £90 a year for morretts and 17" rims some company's would not insure me at all and others wanted up to £1000 more at 26years old with a full clean license and max no claims (for age) so be carefull and check first.

Fair do's.

£1000 extra for alloys & morettes though?! I pay £270 for my van with engine swap, all mods declared & agreed value through hic. Its actually £30 cheaper than my xantia :shock:

Yeah that was the worst quote, strange thing is the same mods on a 24v XM is £350 fully comp, on my 2.08v Auto its £300 f/comp so the car doesnt make much difference. Might try your insurance company when ive done my engine transplant ive been quoted £350 for adding a turbo (The engine thats going in is the genuine blown version of the one i already have in the car) Declaring that ive changed the engine is going to give me a fully comp premuim of about the £450 mark!! so i could do with shopping round really for that.

And getting back to the question asked.I have a tuning box on my 110bhp c5 estate makes a big difference to mine in 3rd and 4th gear.And probably gives a bit better mpg.

Didnt mean to be a scaremonger, its just when you become aware of what happens to your vehicle after an accident or insurance claim you become over cautious, before this unfotunate event i never told the insurance company about any small mods i did on my cars, just wouldnt want any of you guys to get cought out thats all.

Hi Paul,

I had a tuning box I bought off Ebay and fitted it to the Xantia 110 HDi I had. It didn't make much difference but then the Xantia maybe have had a faulty MAF sensor and I didn't know that it had. I paid about £150 3-4 years ago.

With the C5 I went for a remap that I put onto the car itself, this has made a big difference but obviously isn't transferable between cars.

Steve.
