Green and black pressure regulators

Post by ekaftan »

I just bought a pressure regulator and a FDV from a wrecked BX. Both are green (like the spheres). Both the one that came with my XM and
a set I had bought from another wrecked BX were black.

Is there any difference besides the color?

THanks.

There was a time (up till 1966) when all hydraulic parts were painted black, this was when the hydraulic fluid used was LHS2.

In 1966 Citroen changed the fluid from LHS2 to this green stuff called LHM, to try and stop any misshaps as the two fluids would cause lots of problems in the wrong car, they painted all hydraulic components for the LHM system green, and left the LHS2 parts black.

This carried on for years and even the LHM fluid can would have written on the side "Not to be used in Citroens where the reservoir is painted black".

Now this all realy fell apart when the XM surfaced as the car uses LHM but the reservoir and pump are painted black, also the same happened with the Xantia.

Along the way the regulator stayed green as with the Flow distributor valve.

After a while, the regulators started coming out black and the flow distributor stayed green for the BX, but was painted black for the Xantia and XM.

This paint business has caused some confusion, as I have had people ask me if it is alright to put the LHM in their Xantia as the bottle on some brands still states not to be used with black reservoirs!

When we at Pleiades overhaul a regulator, we paint them green if they fit the BX, or XM and Xantia that uses a flow distributor, and black for the others, it's just a way of quick identification. Flow distributor valves are painted green for the BX and mlack for the XM / Xantia, again it's for easy identification.

So in answer to your question, if it has the same amount of pipes going to it, the colour does not matter.

History lesson over.

Regards
Martin.

My educated guess is, that Citroen probably WERE NOT expecting anyone to remember LHS, and assuming ALL cars are LHM (Untill C5) thought it doesn't matter anymore what colour the parts are, but us UK people, have long memories and a Fondness for older cars..

Thats my theroy anyway, propbly a long way off though
