From time to time people mention computer based utilities which I find useful as I'm sure do many of you.
Here is a very useful utility called JDiskReport which I find extremely useful. If you're trying to find out exactly where all your valuable disk space has disappeared this is just what you need. When installed, if you right click on any directory it will give you the option of displaying the size of the various subdirectories underneath it in the form of a pie-chart. Clicking on any of the segments representing a directory in the chart produces a new chart showing the size distribution of that particular directory. I used to spend ages doing this kind of thing manually.
The program is free and has no advertising or other nasties included as far as I'm aware. It can be downloaded here,

Here it is
Scroll down to "Disc Usage Analyser".
Typical that Google found it where I couldn't. Not on the Ubuntu machine again but will have a proper look and post a screenshot if I find it, the one in the article doesn't bear more than a superficial resemblance to mine.

PhotoFiltre
Quite some time ago Jim asked if there was a suitable freeware tool to crop and resize JPG images and after some discussion the general consensus favoured IrFanView.
Here is an alternative French based offering called PhotoFiltre which has a similar small size and efficiency but is primarily intended for photographic post processing.
You are not expected to make a donation to the author as there is a professional version available.
It is available here http://photofiltre.free.fr/
